If Protesters Destroyed Your Car Over Politics, Should They Be Forgiven or Punished as Per the Law?

r/

Imagine your car was burned to the ground – NOT because you provoked anyone, NOT because you took a political stand, BUT simply because it was there, an easy target for a mob seeking to make a statement. Shouldn’t those responsible be treated as criminals who willfully destroyed what wasn’t theirs?

Crimes committed while protesting are still crimes and should be prosecuted as required.

However sometimes you have to do what you have to do even while being aware there will be consequences you will need to face.

  3. CinderrUwU Avatar

    It absolutely should be punished.

  4. DryKaleidoscope6224 Avatar

They should be forced to do battle with one another. There can be only one.

  5. Hoppie1064 Avatar

Punished and make restitution, AKA repair or replace the item damaged.

  6. DizzyMine4964 Avatar

Some cars ARE a political stance.

  7. bluesushi Avatar

Jokes on them, I don’t have a car. Suckers.

  8. 2ShredsUsay39 Avatar

Even if it is a brand of car the protestors hate and has political bumper stickers the protestors disagree with, it’s still a crime for them to destroy someone else’s property.

  9. Fun_East8985 Avatar

    Punished severely

  10. Robert_Grave Avatar

Even if you take a political stance it would still be punishable to destroy the car of the person taking the stance.

  11. Anxious_Ad_4352 Avatar

This is what insurance is for.

  12. HombreSinPais Avatar

Musk repulses me to my core, and I am 100% committed to non-violence. Damaging people’s property should, of course, be prosecuted. I think I speak for the vast, vast majority of people who are fed up with this administration, who manage to remain law abiding.

  13. oneislandgirl Avatar

If they attack the Capital, assault police officers and try to kill congress members then are called patriots and are pardoned after being convicted, seems logical that attacking cars should be forgiven. Oh wait, it’s their cars.

  14. Dramatic-Ad5596 Avatar

Punished, but not deported to El Salvodore… Why are we not protesting in front of Fox news or something meaningful?

  15. Own-Tank5998 Avatar

The only thing protected under the law is peaceful protest, committing crimes is still punishable under the same law.

  16. DirectorBiggs Avatar

Depends on the car, who’s driving it and what kind of actions the driver / vehicle are doing.

  17. Ponklemoose Avatar

If protesters destroy a car because they hate a guy who owns 12.8% of the company that built & sold it they are probably too dumb to be let out in public without a minder, but probably still able to learn from the punishment so I say go for it.

I’d like to see them at least repay the car owner and their insurance company, pay the local government for the fire and police depts’ time & maybe to do jail and/or community service time.

I like the idea of some environmental community service since burn cars (especially electric cars) is pretty nasty for the environment.

Lol, if the ceo of Toyota threw around nazi salutes like they were candy, I’d get rid of my Toyotas. Honda, here I come, lmao. I have no sympathy for people who bought themselves carbombs

  19. Chuckles52 Avatar

Punished, of course. Elon is evil, but the people who bought Tesla cars for the past years are good folks. They were/are doing their part to heal the planet for human life. Ironically, the folks most upset with Elon would be his customers. The Elon/Trump worshipers like to drive big diesel trucks and they love to coal roll electric cars. The Elon/Trump worshipers would buy cars run only by dirty coal if they could. Any attack on a personal Telsa car is really, really, misguided.

  20. Herbie1122 Avatar

People who vandalize private property—in this case, property of a private citizen who in all likelihood bought the car because they liked the car and not the company’s CEO—for whatever reason, political or not, should absolutely be punished and are pieces of shit.

  21. CoastNo6242 Avatar

I guess it depends on the wider context how pragmatic that is but in a society that’s functioning where people are to express their voices and are given a vote then it seems difficult to justify burning down a vehicle.

What purpose does it serve? How is that furthering your political goals if you burn little Mrs. Brown’s car that she uses to go shopping once a week?

It would be a crime any other day of the week I don’t see why it wouldn’t be during a protest. If anything surely there’s more responsibility to not randomly burn shit if you’re trying to make a political statement, presumably being that your views are somehow preferable

Obviously in a society where people are being brutally oppressed or something it’s a completely different context where there’s extreme psychological trauma ongoing and having never experienced anything remotely close to something like that I don’t really wanna comment further on how people in a society should behave

  22. faeriechyld Avatar

I have insurance. It’ll be okay. I wouldn’t want someone going to jail over a car. I wouldn’t want people’s rights to protest be diminished using my damaged property as an excuse. Like 40 hours of community service or something tops but people don’t just protest for funsies. They protest bc they’re at their wits end and don’t feel like they’re being heard. If my burning car helps get that point across, maybe it’s worth the sacrifice.

I just wish our country actually valued life as much as we value things.

  23. intothewoods76 Avatar

They should be held accountable for their actions in accordance with the law, I’m a nice guy but I’m not a doormat to be walked over, why would I allow people that I’ve done nothing to destroy my stuff so they can feel like some kind of vigilante hero? I’d also sue for any out of pocket expenses I have due to their intentional destructive behavior, so legal fees, court costs, my deductible, my rental costs, any lost wages due to not being able to make it to work that first day etc. it will get expensive real fast not even including the insurance company going after them for the loss.

  24. Rand0m-String Avatar

According to Reddit those people are heros.

  25. Born-Finish2461 Avatar

Punished. I am a liberal Democrat and agree any crime should be punished. Including all of the felonies that Trump committed.

  26. Skinny-on-the-Inside Avatar

Destroying property is never okay. Just like it’s never okay to hurt others.

  27. hannibellecter Avatar

did i buy my car from the “fuck you over” car dealership headed by the “guy fucking your country”? then yea i would deserve it i guess?

Saw a guy walk up to a cyber truck with a can of spray paint, guy got out and beat the guy to a bloody mess, I mean blood everywhere, nobody intervened.

  29. Repeat_Offendher Avatar

I think the offenders should be pardoned and given financial compensation for the inconvenience of being incarcerated.

  30. Vladivostokorbust Avatar

yes, it’s called arson, or destruction of property, and they should be prosecuted accordingly. no different than if it was your house or any other piece of property. it doesn’t matter why. what matters is what they actually did. not what they think

  31. AssBlaster_69 Avatar

Im all for destroying tesla dealerships, but don’t fuck with someone’s ride.

  32. Mr_M0t0m0 Avatar

    Leave other people’s property alone.

  33. ReleaseAggravating19 Avatar

Yes obviously they should be arrested and punished. Just because you’re bitching about your team not winning, that doesn’t give you a reason to destroy other peoples property.

  34. oogaboogaman_3 Avatar

Most people who are against Elon Musk would agree that it is a crime, and something that should not be done.

Remember what ever the democrats do the republicans will find a way to be worse and then the democrats will match it.

It’s a race to the bottom right now with awful people on both sides doing awful things.

All non peaceful protesters should be charged with the crimes they commit.

  38. YonderIPonder Avatar

Protestors that destroy property know what they are getting themselves into. At least, those that aren’t cops trying to escalate the protest.
