I was accused of posting a vague anonymous message about someone, even though I wasn’t the one who did it. I admit I had asked a few questions out of curiosity before, so I get why I was an easy target. But I reached out to the person privately, explained myself, apologized for overstepping, and even provided proof that it wasn’t me. They didn’t respond at all—not even a simple acknowledgment. So now I’m stuck wondering, what does that kind of silence usually mean after you’ve tried to clear things up?
If someone accuses you of something you didn’t do, and you calmly explain yourself with proof, but they ignore you, does that mean they don’t believe you, or they just don’t want to admit they were wrong?

They don’t believe you.
Both.
Most people will not be able to assimilate new information that would contradict their beliefs on the spot.
It requires time to reevaluate all their constructed beliefs with that new information. All the consequences it implies, all the links between them and other opinions they have on that base.
Finally comes the ego barrier of admitting being wrong.
So while it might feel like they don’t believe you at the moment, they might be able to change their mind after a while. Others will always refuse no matter what prove. The more aggressive they where in defend their opinion the more difficult it will be to change the mind as it would imply they where the bad person aggressively attacking others while being wrong. Denial and delusion will be the safe place.
Well you tried. If the proof was legit they said nothing they sound like a shitty person anyway.
