Delivery people don’t have the time to wait around for you to be available or to stand there and call you over and over again. If you’re not available either by phone or in person within 60-120 seconds when they show up they should be allowed to take it back and cancel the order.
Edit: You can have more than the aforementioned time IF YOU PICK UP THE PHONE when the delivery person calls you. If not that’s on you for not being available.

I’d run that one by your boss first….or did you already do it, get fired/chewed out, and are now venting about it?
They don’t have that right as far as I know. It likely depends on corporate policy.
If you’re arguing they should have that right, then also in general no. It depends a bit on if it’s catering or regular delivery but either way sometimes shit happens and people aren’t available in less than two minutes to receive an order especially at a corporate event or building.
It sucks when delivery folks get the short end of the stick and I do truly empathize. But I’m not convinced this is the right answer to the problem.
Edit: if you take the food back presumably you’d also be refunding the payment if made in advance or you’d be forfeiting the ability to collect payment after the fact for the wasted ingredients/time? Right?
At least for Doordash when that happens we only have to wait 5 minutes
I can understand having some limit to how long they should wait, but 60 seconds is not a lot of time.
I’ll say this as someone who’s delivered pizza for 3 years, I give them at least two to three phone calls and about three or so minutes before I take the food back. It’s less so depending on the area where I have to deliver (a good deal of my areas were ghetto and frequent hot spots for problems). But yeah I wouldn’t really say the main point is exactly unpopular, if no one shows up I’m taking it back because I’ve got other orders to deliver. I can’t and won’t wait forever, they need to make sure someone is there to get the food in a timely manner. 60 is too short though, so that’s the only thing I’d disagree with here.
I mean they can go ahead and cancel the order should they please but they’re eating a whole lot of cost regarding the food in that case if the client doesn’t have to pay lol
2 minutes seems alittle curt of a time frame, things happen. But the over all sentiment is agreeable
Yeah I tend to agree here, and I’d extend this to all delivery orders. I used to deliver pizzas and I once waited 20 minutes outside of someone’s apartment because they literally fell asleep after ordering, which we of course only found out the next day when they called back and had the audacity to ask for a refund. I called them at least 10 times while waiting. Couldn’t go to their unit because the building was locked, and it was late enough that no front desk staff were present. Such a waste of time. Also had plenty of other people just seemingly forget that they ordered anything. Just wild to me how unaware people are.
I mean, not lying to the customers about the wait time would also fucking help. Way to often have I been told “45-60 minutes” and then the food came after 15 minutes while I was in the shower or whatever.
2 minutes is not that long. Delivery fees and all that jazz, yall should wait at least 5 minutes, that seems reasonable
This is just bad math. If you cancel the order as the delivery person, you’re obviously not getting tipped. You have your back and forth travel time and probably some hassle with the shop canceling the order. If you wait around for another 5 minutes to complete the order, your hourly pay is going to be much higher than if you think you are sticking it to someone for not sprinting to meet you within your absurd 120 second window. But, you do you.
depends on the agreement
on the contrary…. your job is to deliver it. if you take it back with you, you haven’t completed the job
