Move it into a high yield savings account until the bank asks for it back. Then give it back. Have a plan to give it back even if they don’t ask for it.
Probably call my boss and tell her I’m really sorry but I’m quitting my job. My job is cool and my boss is legitimately great, but it’s just not my dream, y’know.
If it was legitimate and no one came knocking, then pay off my mortgage and pay for a good care home for my Dad. Put money aside for my kids so they’re OK, and then have a nice family holiday. Put the rest away so that we’re comfortable, which is all anyone can ask for.
Give $2million to charity. Spread across several notable charities and a couple thousand of it to be given to needy people I know and homeless people cash
Tell the bank immediately. They have made a mistake and when they do an audit they will find this out. If you try tp take this out you can be charged with theft.
Once the bank mistakenly put $20,000 into my account and I told them immediately
This is a fun question to dream about! I would pay off our home, think about rebuilding it and make sure my kids are set up with homes and business ventures they can sustain themselves with for health and connection to their communities. And I would get a dog and build a huge greenhouse for all my plants!
If I were Erika Girardi, apparently I would join a Real Housewives franchise, and blow through it all as quickly as possible, before the feds could stop me.
Well, I’m nearing 60 and I just early-retired, so I don’t really need it to retire. I don’t have any children. Parents are in their 80s and in memory care — would make sure they were getting the most amazing care money could buy, not that they’d know what was behind this amazing care. I’d probably move them back into their home that we’re about to sell and get them the best on-site care money could buy, not that they’d know what was behind this amazing care. But I’d feel better about their care, so there’s that.
I’d travel a few places that would have stupid Americans. They might look the other way when I whip out the money to buy stuff, but the conversation would inevitably turn to what an effed up country the U.S. is becoming. Yeah, I can picture myself saying to the incredulous: “I didn’t vote for TFG.”
Cat shelters and animal care. My boys would be taken care of and so would all their friends.
I’d probably give DC comics a slab of cash to make MAD Magazine healthy again. Kind of a priority for me when we need it the most.
After verifying it’s not an error I will be moving most of it to a sever Swiss banks in a different currency. I don’t trust that banks in the U.S. will be stable over the next year or so…or even that the dollar will be.
Our family actually experienced this well not overnight but it was fast.
What did we do? My parents designed and built their dream home.
It had a indoor pool and indoor hot tub (Wyoming so it was a big deal)
Had a sauna too
Top of the line theater with 12 recliners with cup holders
They built basically a bar on the ground floor had a poker table and a pool table. Dance floor two bar areas fully stocked. Pool had a water slide.
It was almost 30k square foot.
In 2000 New Year’s Eve we were in the NY NY penthouse in Las Vegas for weeks. We had limos at our beck and call.
Had 200k in cash that we played with
Hire a lawyer,
Get in touch with my CPA,
Pay off student debt,
Buy some new pajamas/clothes,
Do some career-related trainings and certifications,
Get a new car that’s not old enough to drink,
Buy a house,
Get new furniture that I like…
I could keep going, but these are the main things.
No one will believe this story but here goes. This actually happened to a friend of mine. He left the bar to hit up the ATM and the receipt said he had a 26 Million balance. Showed us back at the bar and we all got a good laugh.
The next weekend rolls around and no one had seen him. A bit longer goes by and still no word from him. We all traveled for work so not a panic situation but odd. (this is before everyone had cell phones).
Finally someone got news he was not coming back.
Story goes that the next day he went to the bank and said he’d like to close his account and withdraw all the funds. So they move him to an office to start the process of closing the account. Gets to the point where his balance is brought up and it was the correct amount, not 26M. He’s like excuse me, it’s supposed to be this and shows the ATM receipt.
They try and brush it off as a glitch but he was really persistent. This was in a country that has a long history of hiding income for tax purposes. He starts going on about maybe we need to look more closely and just not dropping it. Like for days. Left and told them he’s getting lawyers and all that.
Eventually they made a deal that he would get 10% of the balance but had to leave the country.
Apparently what the bank was doing was moving the money from account to account every few seconds so it never showed up anywhere. He just got lucky and checked his balance when it was in his account. Our guess is the bank didn’t want any real questions so they cut a deal. Had to be because it should have been easy to show it wasn’t his money as there were no deposit records anywhere close to that amount, actually the opposite, years of history showing his actually history.
So he took the money and left. 2.6 million. Tried to get back into the country and was denied at the border. Never saw him again.
Hire a newly retired lawyer (so they can on purpose proceed as slowly as possible). Sue the bank for false hope and emotional distress. Move the money into escrow until the bank and the Clearinghouse can prove they have improved their process to avoid such errors in the future. Then release it back to them. It should take a good couple of months.
Not a damn thing for about 48 hours to see if it went away.
If it was a HYSA, two days of interest would be ~$2100 which would be fine and a lot less trouble than being involved in whatever sort of money laundering or bank shenanigans had put it there.
Pay for a daily, personal hair stylist for my mom. She’s always said, if she had the money, she’d want someone to wash and style her hair every single day. She doesn’t ask for much out of this world, and she has done so, so much for me and my siblings. She deserves it.
Also, she would help me straighten my hair every day in junior high and high school so I wouldn’t have that kink on the back of my crown. Yeah. She deserves it.
This happened to me, not exactly 20 mil, but out of the blue I got a check for 18,000 from the department of education. No explanation, just an envelope with a check.
I was like, this has to be a scam. Called the department of education and explained what had happened. Took about 2 hours of nonsense and people, but finally got to the answer that due to the university I went to going bankrupt and getting sued to kingdom come, I was refunded some of the money I’d taken out as loans that I had repaid.
Pay off every cent of my debt.
Buy some property and a house.
Furnish the house.
Get my vehicles straight- fixed or replaced.
Set up a monthly allowance and put the rest in savings.
Buy a used car. Get a few months of insulin to insulate myself against the destruction of the welfare I rely on. Get dental work done. Donate to Bernie or AOC. Buy a Nintendo switch 2 when it comes out with donkey Kong. Look into having a house or place to call home again. Work towards rebuilding my collection of abandoned and lost mementos. A room for a keyboard, sax, clarinet, vibraphones and marimba. A room for Zelda and Ghibli and monster hunter and figurines and DnD. A small cozy room with plants and a fireplace lined with bookshelves with the series I love like Malazan, Hyperion Cantos, Sanderson, and Rothfuss.
Money wouldn’t make me happy but it would certainly make me not unhappy at this point.
I hate what’s going on in the world though. Money won’t help with that. I wish I knew how I could help, but frankly I don’t. Everything feels awful right now.
At least half into mutual funds/stocks, maybe a quarter buying property for rentals, 2m into a trust for the kid, 1m cash, 1m precious metal, have fun with what’s left.
Freeze the account and call the police. Someone is going to come looking for that much money, and I want to be damn sure it’s all still there when they do.
Oddly enough things like this to happen every now and then. Usually a mistaken deposit. The problem is if you spend it knowing it’s not yours, it becomes a criminal offense
Pay off everything, fly to NYC and have a team from JP Morgan work out a plan so I can ensure I’m good and my close friends and family are set for life.
Call my layer, have my lawyer call the bank, call an accountant. Have my accountant move the money out of the bank because if they’re dumb enough to give it to me free and clear, I don’t want them handling my money.
Hire a lawyer. Tell no one. Anonymously leave ‘gifts’ to those who really need it. Always wanted to foster kids but in today’s financial climate that looks bleaker every day. So that then, I’d buy a big farm and start building from the ground up, I’d try to buy my childhood farm back from the rich banker who bought it a few years ago. I’d donate an awful lot of it, and spend the rest of my days in service, being able to finally serve. Would need to lawyer to cover some sort of anonymity with all that haha

I’d visit LawByMike’s YouTube channel, he teaches us what to do financially, legal stuff (?), etc.

Call the bank. As much as I would love to spend it, I’m not that dumb either. It’s a clear scam/error.
