I’m 17 years old female. Struggling to explain and convince my parents that I might have ADHD #adhd #help

r/

I’ve read like, more than 100 articles and watched videos about adhd and its symptoms. I am in constant brain fog. And have a very short attention span. Hyperfixate a lot over characters I draw, for example. My grades are good. I finished school with difference. BUT. I still struggled. It cost my mental health AND physical health. I had my first panick attacks this year due to university entrance exams.

My family have old mindset about psychologists/psychiatrists. They say that they will diagnose me on purpose, while I am a healthy girl and will prescribe unnecessary medicine etc. They say you always was doing your homework. I say I zone out. Very much. Too much. And it didn’t even start thus year. It was since I was younger. Even my matg teacher noticed it that I wasn’t paying attention. I somehow managed to convince them. But they still were skeptical and just did it to shut me up because I was pestering

Yesterday I went to a psychologist. Who had no idea about adhd. 50+ or 60+ years old woman. She diagnosed that I am too sensitive and have depression. And when I asked about adhd, she didn’t even talk about it with me.

Like come on! I literally do 3 hours work in 6-7 hours. My brain is loud. I have that waiting pralysis. I just wanna make sure is everything okay? I feel like if I have that, and I can finally oficially get diagnosed, that maybe I will feel better. Less guilty. And finally find help.

I’m planning on consulting about it in future by my own after I gain independence. Maybe even in different country. Because in mine, we don’t have proper help. Our psychologists only can diagnose little boys who climb walls. And oftenly they do it just for money.

Do my parents right that if I find ‘professional therapist’, they will diagnose me on purpose to harm me and earn money??? Please help. I really need it. My mind is so loud rn

That’s a hard case … you may have ADHD but without a good medical check I don’t think your parent will ever understand.
Good luck finding the right doctor to help you convince your parents and also ADHD if it don’t block your from your life, tou should need any medication.
Can you check on different review of each doctor near your to see what other say about them ?
Maybe an ADHD group can help you better to diagnose you.

A good mental health professional won’t diagnose you with something solely for money. I encourage you to find someone more knowledgeable when you have the time/money/freedom.

It sounds like you’re dealing with a lot of anxiety. Anxiety messed with executive dysfunction (waiting paralysis) and make you feel like your brain is loud.

What’s important to remember is, regardless of diagnosis, you can start this journey on your own. Look up grounding exercises, walking meditation, box breathing. Work on “life hacks” and habits and routines that support yourself (for example, I have a hard time leaving the shower, so I put on music; the change in songs helps prompt me to get out).

You need a clinical psychologist specializing in issues like ADHD, Autism, etc.

Clinical psychologists have almost a decade of school, half of which is ONLY in psychology.

If this is what the literal expert in mental health observed in you, you might want to listen.

Depression absolutely interferes with executive functioning.
