I’m a co-owner on a car, but the other owner and I are no contact. How can I sell/get rid of this car legally?

Location: Texas

Car is registered under my name, but I was a minor at the time the car was purchased so I don’t have the title. Parent is listed as primary owner and I am secondary.

Current plan is to leave the car at their house with a note saying I relinquish my rights to the car and any sales of it- I don’t want the money because I didn’t pay for the car to begin with. Can I legally do this? Do I need more documentation?

How are your name and parent’s name listed on the title?

Specifically, is there a word between your parent’s name and your name?

If the word “OR” is between the names then your parent can sell the car without your involvement. (And you can sell it without their involvement if you have the title.)

If the word “AND” is between the names (or if there is no word between the names) then both of you must sign the title to sell the car. The note you are planning to leave will not give your parent the ability to sell the car without your involvement. You must be present to sign the title.

Texas does have a motor vehicle power of attorney form which would give you the ability to allow the sale without personally signing the title. You would leave this document along with the car, instead of that note you mentioned.
