Why does the us use a generalist approach for judges?

My company was sued for patent infringement, and the judge assigned also did criminal, civil, patents, ip, tenant, like just everything.

Do you find having to explain the law to a judge before getting a ruling? Do you find a difference between judges familiar with patents vs those who are not at all?

I filed patent years ago – went through the whole process. Cost me more than $20k. Now the USPTO finally responded and it may cost me another $3500 to continue.

I have another idea that I am thinking about using AI to file the provisional patent. It is MUCH cheaper and faster. Would it be ok if i had an attorney review it before I filed?
What are the gotchas that i should watch for.

How much of a mess is the US Patent environment? Do you think a lot of patents that have been approved are much too broad and overreaching? Do you think the entry to patents is too restrictive for small companies looking to protect their IP?

Disclaimer – I am a very small business that decided against patenting my IP because of the blatant violations that would occur and I knew I wouldn’t have the resources to protect even if my patent was approved.

It seems that the deterrent for taking IP is not strong enough. Why would anyone pay upfront when they can steal and even if they get caught and litigated they would likely only be on the hook for a reasonable royalty.
