I’m a Planning Officer/Town Planner in the UK, work for an undisclosed council, I also work privately. I have been in the game for 15 years, nobody wants to do this job anymore so it’s in hot demand. Ask me anything.

Why are people no longer interested in it?
What entry level jobs did you get after attending university or higher education, if you did?
It can be quite low paying for years to start and need a higher than required (imo) education to get in. The precedent is an undergraduate degree then a masters then you need to get chartered and I don’t think you need all of that education to do it. It’s not a cool job, you can get a lot of abuse from communities opposing developments.
I worked as an assistant on a low pay when I had my degrees, admin, bitch work. I guess this is the norm for a lot of these roles but there is a distinct lack of interest in this field with younger people. I could see AI taking over in the future. Private work is very lucrative, you can charge solicitor rates but the hustle can be hard and work up and down that most planners dare not take the plunge to solely do this so it’s like planning is your side hustle to planning…x2 jobs.
