Im sad THT is sponsored by ChatGPT

r/

Hello THT Reddit! I am a long time listener and not a huge poster on Reddit. I wanted to come here to express something I felt while listening to the latest episode, “Justifiable Crash Out.” I noticed immediately that THT is being sponsored by Chat GPT. If those dont know ChatGPT is one of the bigger AI platforms where you can type questions or tasks and it can dump out information quickly (I know I extremely simplified it). What made me feel sad as the title states is that I believe that any content creation entity whether that just be 1 person or a podcast network, they can and should be judged for who they take on as sponsors as it reflects the people making the content. ChatGPT as one of the biggest generative AI platforms they are one of leading consumers of electricity and water as well as carbon dioxide pollution. Did you know that when you use ChatGPT for doing your homework or asking a question, it uses 5 times more power than a simple search engine. I get the quickness of it and how it can be useful in certain uses but it is doing too much harm for it be good. I didnt want to come here and attack THT because I do love the show and I listen with my fiancee who I share a patreon subscription with. I wanted to come here to educate some of those who dont know the harm ChatGPT is and can do to our shared home. Here is a link to an article that can go deeper and provide better explanation than me: https://news.mit.edu/2025/explained-generative-ai-environmental-impact-0117

It’s just a tool. That’s like being mad at hammers. Follow through on this logic and you will be Amish in no time.

ChatGPT runs on cloud services like Microsoft Azure. Microsoft has pledged to run on 100% renewable energy by 2025 and to become carbon negative by 2030 which means not only reducing emissions but removing more carbon from the atmosphere than they produce. While yes currently OpenAI uses a mix of renewable energy and fossil fuels they are committed to being better for the environment in the long run. I don’t think it’s fair to put the onus on the average person using ChatGPT for homework or Morgan who is sponsored by OpenAI. You should be lobbying your government to make renewable energy more accessible, affordable and reliable.
