I’m sick of multiple timelines being a crux for plot

r/

I’ve just watched too many shows that never had any multiverse suddenly use it as a part of plot. Dr. Who, umbrella academy 4th season, Invincible. Like it is a cool idea but I’m sick of it and it is lazy world building.

    LOST was terrible for this

Doctor Who has been dealing with parallel universes and multiple timelines for over half a century. I wouldn’t exactly call it sudden.

Multiverse is a popular sci-fi trend right now, but the idea has been around for decades.

I do agree with your point overall, I hate time travel and multiverses and such as a plot device in most cases but…

Dr. Who? Really? The show with the core premise of time travel? Kinda a staple of the show at its heart. That’s like criticising a superhero movie for the fact that its characters have superpowers

Isn’t time travel and the repercussions of meddling with the fabric of spacetime literally the premise of Doctor Who? And Umbrella Academy? And while it’s not the central premise of Invincible, the show and comic it’s based on are literally a deconstruction and reconstruction of the entirety of the superhero genre. They’re going to do a multiverse. You’ve picked the three worst examples to use for this trope, which makes me think you don’t know as much about what you’re talking about as you think you do.

Time travel was baked into the umbrella academy from the literal start. The multiverse fit perfectly well with the setup of the previous 3 seasons.
