I’m terrible at communicating

r/

I’m terrible at communicating and it’s ruining my 2 year relationship. I (M 53) don’t know how to communicate properly, my partner (F 52) says I never talk to her and that she can’t be with someone who doesn’t talk.

I don’t know how to start conversations. Last night she asked me to tell her a story from my past and I completely brain locked. I could not come up with anything and just sat there in silence. Understandably, she got very upset and it’s causing a crisis in our relationship.

I love this person and I want to fix this, but I don’t know where to begin. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

TL;DR – I’m not good at talking and am looking for advice on how to improve.

    Hi dad!!

No but really, my father is like this and it’s so hard for everyone. He opens up sometimes and he’s such a cool, interesting person with a fascinating past but we only ever get glimpses of it from
time to time. I worry that when he dies I will have never really known him.

So I’m gonna tell you, there isn’t a how to communicate that I would prefer my dad to take up. I just wish he’d start yapping more often.

Start with this. Tell her you are bad a this and you want to do better and are struggling to do so. Acknowledge this as an issue and something you want to work on, and she may appreciate that.
