I am learning about Latin American rock music (I also asked a somewhat related question a few days ago) and several people have told me that Soda Stereo, Gustavo Cerati, and other Argentine bands/artists were quite popular, at least in the previous generation. Obviously I started with the most popular, so since last week I’ve been listening to Charly Garcia, Spinetta, Indio Solari, etc. on the recommendation of my friends. They are also listened to in other parts of Latin America?
And I would appreciate if you could recommend me a band (from any Latin American country)!

Not so much. Argentine bands/artists famous abroad beyond Cerati can be Fito Páez, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and Los Enanitos Verdes. Charly García may be somewhat known but Los Redondos (and Indio Solari) are a rare case of something truly massive at their peak but almost inexistent in the rest of latam.
From what I read here in the sub, Charly did, maybe not as much as Cerati did with Soda Stereo. El indio I think is an entirely Argentinean phenomenon, we never exported him jijiji
Famous singers we know from Argentina
Charly García
Vicentico de los Cadillacs
Mercedes Sosa
Babasónicos as a band are known but not famous famous
Leon Gieco as well
Cerati (and by extension Soda Stereo) are well known all across Latin America, same with other Argentinian bands like Enanitos Verdes or Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. Other artists like Charly García and Spinetta also achieved international recognition, though in Northern México they are not that well known (and I would imagine it’s the same for the rest of México). I never knew about them until I found their music in spotify playlists. And I only knew about Indio Solaris when I visited Argentina, he seems to be quite popular there but not much outside of the country. Argentine rock music in general is very popular in LatAm, and very good if you ask me.
As for México, I’d recommend Cafe Tacvba. Their album “Re” is widely considered one of the best spanish-language albums of all time
Charly is really great!
Tbh I thibk the only spanish speaking person (not anita) to have hits here in the past decade would be Bad Bunny and his most recent dtmf
I’d say that Cerati and Soda are top well known. Then, you can put los cadillacs, maybe los decadentes, amar azul (not rock tho), and probably Charly. Then, the rest.
My faves are Cerati/Soda and Legiao Urbana. Both legends tragically no longer with us.
