My best choice is Carleton College and it is located in a pretty isolated town in Minnesota. Do Top 20 universities in USA consider it to be competitive for admits in PhD?

Yea, definitely. It’s one of the top LACs. And I definitely know two other Carleton grads (one’s now teaching at my school’s econ department) who ended up in econ PhD. Also, if this makes you happy, Joshua Angrist (the guy who won Nobel Prize in econometrics) went to Oberlin College in Ohio.
Also, be careful with reddit, in general, people are not knowledgeable about LACs.
Northfield is cool.
