I mean it’s significantly better.
I enjoyed 2001 it was visually pleasing, I understand the context of when it released playing a part in its significance as well. I stand by that Interstellar is, by far, the superior movie.

Yep, this is unpopular. And I agree with you! We are in the minority.
Very unpopular for me.
As with most of Chris Nolan’s movies. I think Interstellar is very overrated by the general public.
I upvote because I disagree with every fibre of my being.
OK so we’ve only got a decade or two to save humanity, might be even less time, and very few options for Planet B and extremely little time to investigate them. Let’s go immediately to the planet suffering massive time dilation due to the proximity of a gargantuan black hole which is almost certain to be uninhabitable also it’s a water planet and the spacecraft isn’t waterproof so we might get stuck there for a bit
By a long shot! But yeah, this is unpopular opinion for sure.
I mean yeah, I don’t like 2001 at all, so sure. The definition of revolutionary and incredible for the time.
Brother, I think Christopher Nolan himself would disagree with you (I love both movies dearly).
I hope this war crime was worth the upvotes for you.
Forget it. No comparison.
‘Better’ is such a strange word to use to compare films attempting to accomplish different things. One is a twisty-turny narrative, with great character development… the other is an expressionist masterpiece, begging for unique interpretations.
What’s the better movie… No Country For Old Men, or Monty Python and the Search For the Holy Grail?
its basically the same movie, interstellar just has a relatable, tender family storyline at the center that makes it more enjoyable for most.
I absolutely and wholeheartedly agree. Interstellar is my favorite movie.
I haven’t sat down and watched 2001 yet but I loath interstellar. It gets so much hype for being a pretty standard drama that’s set in space. Honestly don’t like much of Nolan’s stuff it feels like standard movies with big “brainy” themes that are overexplained and underdeveloped.
At risk of coming off as some insufferable asshole, I think 2001 is a superior piece of art, but it certainly is less accessible than interstellar is. As a piece of film 2001 is leaps and bounds ahead, I really like interstellar though don’t get me wrong but seeing 2001 in 70mm in the cinema is something transcendental.
2010: The Year We Make Contact is better than 2001: A Space Odyssey
I’m not so sure. Love it but the ending and love transcending known physics tainted the film for me.
This is a terrible opinion. Take the well-earned upvote.
I disagree, but I also disagree that this is an unpopular opinion in 2025. Interstellar is rated higher (8.7) on IMDB than 2001 (8.3), indicating that the general public prefers Interstellar. 2001 (89%) is rated slightly higher than Interstellar (87%) on the Rotten Tomato popcorn scale (general public), but with millions fewer votes for each movie compared to IMDB. 2001 is rated much higher (90% vs 73%) on the Tomato scale (film critics). The general public prefers Interstellar.
Hahahahahahahaha
No, but the last third of 2001 is incredibly bad.
You liking it better is one thing.
Calling it is a superior movie won’t hold up in court.
It’s like preferring a really good burger over a 3 course meal from a 5 star chef. It doesn’t mean that the burger is superior cuisine.
I can’t tell you how much this hurts my soul to hear someone say this.
I think 2001 is the better film, but I do love Interstellar, “love transcends time and space” quote and all.
You can have this opinion
And I can have the opinion that Palm Springs is a better film than Interstellar
Interstellar has a lazy messy script. It’s like they couldn’t figure out how to tie shit together at the end, so they just Deus Ex Machina’ed their way out. Love is the key? Word? And they came up with the answer using a causation paradox? That explains nothing. The movie is good, I’m not knocking it, but it’s main flaw is a bad script. Just watch the scene with Cooper in the blurry bookcase scene and listen to the dialogue. It’s like Star Trek technobabble, but instead of being there as a way to hang larger themes around the technology (like in Star Trek) this jargon nonsense is supposed to be explaining how the whole movie ties together. Embarassing.
I enjoyed both, but this is definitely unpopular. Interstellar was an interesting movie, but the ending got a little bit too sappy and happily ever after. The trippy and weird ending of 2001 stuck the landing.
Interstellar is more comparable in quality to 2010 in my opinion.
get out
After seeing what people here are saying, I need to watch 2001 A Space Odyssey. Interstellar is probably my favorite movie of all time, and I’m a sucker for good space movies.
Unpopular opinion: the Adam Sandler movie “Spaceman” is a better written, more coherent, and more profound and personal movie than Interstellar.
Do you think there’s a possibility you have a recency bias? You’re more used to modern storytelling and movie-making styles, and therefore the newer movie gels better with your expectations.
I think you might also be failing to take into account the influence that 2001: A Space Odyssey had and continues to have on pretty much every space movie that followed.
Downvoted I agree
2001: A space Odyssey is easily the most overrated movie of all time and it’s not close. People claim it is the single greatest work of film to ever grace a screen. The opening is interesting, monkeys discovered an alien object to become smarter and learn tools. All conveyed with no dialogue, narration or anything, fantastic! Then we have characters going to the moon and stand Infront of another object. Do they learn or do anything with it? NOPE! They walk up to it and we start off on the third part of the story. Are the characters in the moon story interesting? NOPE! All their dialogue is basically exposition. Do any of these characters carry over to the next part of the story? NOPE! You are dropped off 40ish minutes into the story learning every character from scratch. Are there multiple 8+ minute sections where it’s just soundtrack and a space station flying through space? ABSOLUTELY! I’m not joking there’s an 8 minute section and a 12 minute section that is only there to show off the effects, no character, no dialogue, nothing is happening. The entire plot stops dead in its tracks multiple times. Is there an LSD trip that’s just random shots of things with inverted colors, yes that’s not the issue, the issue is that this section is almost 4 minutes long. I got up and went to the bathroom at this part and left it going, came back and was surprised that it was still going, I rewound it to see if anything happened.
I could easily cut the movie down to 50 minutes and the plot will be LITERALLY untouched. Opening with the monkeys, some exposition of the monoliths, them approaching the moon monolith, the HAL plot (cutting out the flying scenes) and the last few minutes.
I’ll agree with you even though I’ve never seen Interstellar. I watched 2001 for the first time last weekend and I just didn’t get it. I’ll never re-watch it. Lame. Stanley Kubrick made weird movies.
Not only unpopular but a shit take also
Insterstellar is not even close, like not even in the same league as 2001.
Both films are amazing though.
Truly Unpopular.
2001 was about Evolution in the Cosmos and Interstellar is a high falutin study of love, family and maybe some science.
Side note: I honestly do not get the adoration for Interstellar. It was a fun movie but ultimately it felt like a waste of time. The Daughter fixes the situation and then McConaughey is off to find Anne Hathaway? Felt like a sequel was in mind.
Far too many people thing that all movies are in competition with one another.
I saw 2001 in the theatre when I was 15, interstellar this year. I was never really impressed with 2001 but Interstellar I figured the ending midway through the movie so both for me are Meh
Mmm, no. Its a mess of a movie with nicely made black hole (that isn’t even entirely accurate).
2001 is Art. You can’t watch it thinking of it like a regular movie. Judge it as everything together not in parts. Intterstellar is cool, but some of them mfs dumb in there
No. Interstellar is better than Contact though.
not only is better, but BY FAR… take my outraged upvote, even Nolan would slap you if he heard you.
2001 has its moments, but imo, the story is a bit weird. That tunnel of light at the end took a bit too long.
The props and the lil spaceship models still look cool AF, but that’s about it.
2001 is a horrible watch. It just drags on and on and on. I appreciate what it did for cinema, and can recognize it is objectively a master piece, but it is not an enjoyable viewing experience.
How old are you?
Christopher Nolan makes movies that make dumb people feel smart. I don’t like most of his work. Memento was pretty good, though.
2001 is amazing. Stanley Kubrick didn’t give a shit if you understood or not. Love his movies.
1 bad take, 2 silly comparison, 3 comparing directors is a bad faith argument
I’d like Interstellar more if I understood how Cooper got out of the black hole. It really just falls onto “space magic” at that point, which is quite a contrast to the somewhat realistic portrayals of the film up to that point
Alien is better than either.
I mean this is quite the unpopular decision so…I guess take an upvote? Even though your opinion is quite factually wrong.
Oh man. I still can’t get over the tidal wave scene on the black hole adjacent planet. Super smart scientists are caught off guard by a mile high tidal wave on a water planet next to a black hole. They could probably see that thing from space.
2001 is the worst movie i watched in my entire life so i agree
100%
I like interstellar more, but seeing 2001 when I was 15 and stoned, I couldn’t believe the year it was made. I was shocked. They’re definitely different films.
Still fun to get stoned and zone out to 2001. The music is delightful 🙂
I agree
2001 seemed like you could cut 60% of the movie and be totally fine
There would be no interstellar if not for 2001, Nolan would tell you that himself.
Two completely different movies.
For me Interstellar is much better movie than 2001 even if I haven’t seen both of them. The sound and video quality alone makes it better for me as I don’t really like those older movies audio quality. It just feels so compressed and low quality.
I already know that this comment will get downvotes as most watch movies mainly for the story, but for me even if the story is good, but it has bad audio and video quality, it is no go for me
Interstellar is a mediocre film
lol
Both are good movies, but I could not disagree with you more.
These films are barely comparable at all. Really the only thing they have in common is space.
These films have nothing to do with each other apart from being set in space.
Also 2001 is fucking boring, lets be honest
They are two different movies about two different things. They come from different eras of movies. The only thing they share is being set in space. You’re essentially saying an apple is better at making apple pie because it’s not an orange.
Of course it. Not a controversial opinion.
2001 came out so long ago, there was really nothing like it at the time.
Completely different movies that are incomparable. Interstellar is my favorite movie but this is an incredibly silly take.
2001 was boring af
I remember having 2001: A Space Odyssey on my watch list for so long. When I finally got around to watching it, I was so excited!……only to be thoroughly underwhelmed. “People have praised and raved about this movie for decades,” I thought. How could I not like it? And yet it was awful.
And I’m not even talking about the dated visuals. Those were actually really impressive to me, especially considering when it came out. It was the snail-paced “story” made up of several snapshots in time that had little-to-nothing to do with each other, and most of them weren’t even interesting or accomplishing anything. I guess if you like visually pleasing films that leave a lot to the imagination and interpretation, then I could see how you’d love it. But for me it was not an enjoyable watch.
1000% agree with OP
Yeah I agree, it’s not a contest tbh
Very unpopular opinion, well done.
Interstellar is a great Hans Zimmer album attached to a good-looking but mostly hollow movie.
