[Invincible] What exactly was the purpose of the viltrumite purge?

r/

Yes, they wanted only the strong, but after a virus ravaged your race, is killing off what remains in your best interest? Even if after the virus only a few thousand survive, wouldn’t that be way better numbers for conquering the universe and maintaining your empire than the 50ish that were left by the time of the series?

I think purge was before virus

It wasn’t as much a “purge of the weak” as a full-on civil war. The winning faction then phrased it as a purge to make them look better.

(Paraphrasing what I read somewhere else)

The purge happened before the virus. The purge purpose was to eliminate anyone with opposing ideologies, to keep their ideology “pure”.

    To kill the weak.

    Or the dissenters.

It was a civil war, the leadership of the Empire dissolved and many contenders rose up, leading to planet wide war. The name was chosen after the fact. The victor writes history.
