[Invincible] Why are the earth residents so resistant to joining the empire.

r/

The show doesn’t really say what the conditions will be, so it seems kinda silly how hard they fight against it.

99.99% of earth doesn’t have the faintest clue about what’s going on with the Viltrum Empire or Earth being a target for it.
They know Omni-Man suddenly went evil, killed thousands, almost killed his son and flew off. That’s about it.

As for why those who do know about it, they know it’s obviously terrible news from everything involving Nolan.

This is a bit like asking why Ukraine is resisting an invasion by Russia, or why Canada doesn’t want to be annexed by an obviously inferior country.

their only ambassador and point of reference for the empire brutally murdered their greatest heroes and then destroyed chicago. so.

you say it’s silly how strongly they fight it, but keep in mind the order of events: Nolan goes on his murder spree and then they get the full story about the viltrumites wanting to conquer earth and bring it into its empire. not a great start. and then ever since nolan left, viltrum just keeps sending berserkers that destroy more of earth.

i feel like it’s silly to think that anybody would accept such a violent invitation

The first diplomat was a guy that laid low for twenty or so years, then absolutely and completely obliterated large portions of the United States while giving a speech about how human lives meant absolutely nothing.

The second diplomat lived up to the name a little better by using prettier language and actually explaining the “benefits” of the Empire, but then immediately beat the shit out of the guy that refused her offer.

And then the third and final “diplomat” was a psychopath’s psychopath who came to the planet explicitly to let loose and slaughter as much as he liked until the planet was subjugated.

This is on top of Allen the Alien who’s in contact with the greater galactic community coming to Earth to warn them that their was a Viltrumite on the planet.

It’s really not hard to figure out that Annisa – the only one who even bothered to try and make subjugation presentable – was just lying and that the Empire is a cruel, tyrannical force.

Viltrumite Empire isn’t really a galactic Empire – it is a bloated occupation force – they just keep planets under their heel, instead of integrating them, and thus they don’t get the benefits of being part of a galactic society.

Have you…seen the way Viltrumites talk about anyone who isn’t one of them?

That should tell you everything that you need to know about what life would be like as a subject of their empire. Also, for anyone who thinks “well, just do what you’re told and you’ll be all right,” please let go of that kind of wishful thinking.

    Help me out here.

What about the superhuman space-racists who keep dropping from the sky to casually level entire cities give you the impression that it’d be smart to put them in charge of the human race?

Historically empires have been about extracting resources and value from vassals, colonies and the outer provinces and then using that wealth to support the core of the empire. Given the attitude of Viltrumite representatives to humans it is very unlikely that they would consider human needs.

It is likely that if earth would join the empire it would have its resources (both material and human) strip mined at an unsustainable rate and then left a broken and abandoned when resource extraction was no longer viable (see the mess that are formal imperial colonies in Africa and southern Americas).
