Is it ok to hang certificates on the wall?

r/

Or will visitors think you’re bit of a knob?

Or does it depend? I’ve just been made a fellow of my finance institute and it’s relevant to my job, was thinking I’d put it up behind my desk at home (otherwise I have no idea what else I’d do with it).

Degree from 15 years ago in unrelated subject- maybe not?

Meh, it’s your house, hang up what you want!

  3. zephyrmox Avatar

If it’s important to you, sure, go ahead.

  4. FetchThePenguins Avatar

If it’s in your home office, sure.

I wouldn’t put either of those things up in your living room.

  5. GuybrushFunkwood Avatar

Of course it is. I proudly display my 10m swimming award from 1987 as well my basic first aid certificate.

  6. DurhamOx Avatar

Do whatever you want, OP, it’s your house.

I would strongly advise you against doing so in somebody else’s home though, especially that of a stranger or enemy.

  7. boredbuthonest Avatar

My certifications and awards are in a box in the loft. If it brings you satisfaction go for it as it is your home.

  8. andrew0256 Avatar

Your certificate, your house, your desk. If it’s needed for your job and you hold Zoom meetings at your desk it’s probably the best thing to put there. If not, do it anyway. If visitors think you’re a knob for doing so maybe they’re not the sort of visitors you want anyway.

  9. spidertattootim Avatar

I would probably think it’s a bit weird but I am shamelessly judgemental, so you do you.

  10. SonOfGreebo Avatar

Traditionally, as with honorary degree awards from universities where you’ve given a speech, Emmys, Oscar statuettes, and those certificates claiming you are now heir to an ancient Scottish barony-   hang it in the downstairs guest loo.

  11. RainbowPenguin1000 Avatar

In a home office it’s fine. That’s a place of professionalism and work.

  12. AccomplishedRice7427 Avatar

My husband has his chartered status certificate hung up in the study. My PhD certificate is in a cupboard somewhere.
Point being so what you like, it’s you house 🙂

  13. Inkblot7001 Avatar

Only if you hang on the public side of your front door

.. which is what I do with all my swimming badges: 1 length up to 20 lengths. People wave one handed fingers curled compliments all the time from the pavement.

  14. Neddlings55 Avatar

Id rather see certificates in someones house rather than ‘live, laugh, love’ stencilled on the walls, or a massive sparkly ‘HOME’.

I have things on my walls that make me happy, and everyone else can get fucked.

  15. Pip1710 Avatar

Mate, get it up there; be proud of your achievements!

  16. TheColonelKiwi Avatar

It’s your house, who cares what visitors think. But also I think if I saw it in someone’s house I’d think it was cool if anything.

  17. JagexUIBugged Avatar

Mate, I got kicked out of 2 schools, multiple teachers said I wouldn’t go university, I spent 2/3 years bumming out thinking what to do, did degree apprenticeship and although pay sucked, I got that picture with my parents and wife, hung that shit up real quick, that shit is hard and people in other countries will do ANYTHING to attain education, it’s not a right in those areas

  18. Chance_Departure8080 Avatar

Fuck it, if you’ve worked hard to earn it and it means something to you, display it. My Mom has my undergraduate degree certificate on her wall. I was 42 and the first woman in our line to complete a degree when I got it and never asked her to display it, but it means something to her, so there it stays. This idea about being British and modest is rubbish.

  19. Sea-Possession-1208 Avatar

Up in home office or downstairs loo are the traditional places for such things

  20. Apprehensive_Sun1762 Avatar

If you have a space in your home that is office like, maybe a work room or a corner with only work stuff, you can hang there. It would feel less strange. But it is your home, so make it your happy place

  21. El_Zilcho Avatar

I would say it’s an American thing to do, when doing a course/cert for work that is by a company based in the US they asked if I wanted to pay $80 for the paper copy or $300 for it mounted on a wood glass plaque thing for wall mounting (on top of like £2500 my employer paid for the training and exam!)

  22. goldenhawkes Avatar

Either in your home office, or downstairs loo!

  23. ButteredNun Avatar

Frame everything. Put them in the hallway and show everyone, plumber, everyone that steps inside your threshold. It’s good to help people form an opinion about us more readily. When they see my bungee jump certificate and my Thailand cookery course certificate, they know the kind of intriguing man they’re dealing with!

Edit: I’m just being a pillock. If you’ve worked hard and you’re proud then put them on the wall. Those that mind don’t matter, those that matter don’t mind.

  24. driven_user Avatar

Hanging it in your work space is the only place for it too go and if a significant achievement you’re proud of you should display it in some way. Not my style, personally but I’m a shame filled brit.

  25. BaBaFiCo Avatar

We have our degree certificates in our office. My wife thought it was a bit naff but I’m gonna get something out of that £9k!

  26. jgs84 Avatar

Putting things like that up in your house would be a bit cringe.

  27. Darkmelon12_ Avatar

I have both my degrees up alongside my partners degree in the home office. It does look a bit knobish but they are achievements I’m extremely proud of so fuck it.

  28. dinkidoo7693 Avatar

If it inspires you why not?

  29. Flashington1 Avatar

    Yes, and yes.
Don’t put it somewhere in plain view as it reeks of “ooh look at me, I’m special and have a qualification that a million people get every year in the UK”
Put it somewhere less in people’s faces like in the study.

  30. GenericBrowse Avatar

    Live, laugh, certificate

  31. sokorsognarf Avatar

Bit naff, but if you want to badly enough, who cares what anyone else thinks?

  32. SpudFire Avatar

If your desk is in a home office then I’d say go for it if it will make you happy seeing it. How many visitors even go in there anyway? If your desk is actually your dining room table then it might be a bit strange.

It might be a bit of a faff having to take them down and put them in your Record of Achievement (the-most-important-folder-you’ll-ever-own™) every time you go for a job interview though.

  33. ProffesorPrick Avatar

In office is absolutely fine. Anywhere else? A bit gaudy imo

  34. MortimerMan2 Avatar

I have my professional membership in my study at home, and fellowship hanging in my office.

Dad has his in his study

Father in law has his in the living room

So yes, flaunt it. You earned it, do what you like!

Tbh they don’t really draw the eye so 99% of people won’t even notice it.

Not sure where my degree certificate went(!), don’t really care though.

  35. perishingtardis Avatar

Yeah I’ve got my 5-metre swimming certificate, Cycling Proficiency, and Bronze Duke of Edinburgh all framed and proudly displayed.

Joking aside, I have a PhD. I don’t have a clue where the certificate is.

  36. Visible-Traffic-5180 Avatar

Surely hanging it, nicely framed,  in the downstairs toilet is the accepted middle to upper class way to do it?

  37. kylehyde84 Avatar

Our lass is a semi pro footballer, her shirt from the year they won the league plus medal and team picture and other bits from her career are in our home gym room. So I’d say fine in the right setting like a home office

  38. crumpets289 Avatar

Behind your desk is absolutely fine. In the middle of your mantle piece? Absolutely fine for a few weeks if you want to admire your hard work, but would be a bit weird permanently

  39. thethirdbar Avatar

huh. this has just made me realise i have no idea where my CIMA certificate is. what did i do with it?!

and my degree certificate for that matter.

    hopefully the loft.

  40. Drwynyllo Avatar

It’s perfectly ok, yes — it’s your home.

But who, apart from you, is going to see it? That said, if it’ll give you a warm glow to see it there, go for it.

Fwiw, I never bothered, but I can understand why people in certain professions (e.g. the law, medicine) routinely do so — it’s to instill confidence in their clients/patients.

  41. Most_Moose_2637 Avatar

I’ve got my BSc on my wall… and my SSc.

  42. mellonians Avatar

Definitely your highest vocational qualification in the office on the wall. Anything notable in the toilet, that’s where I have one. Everything else in your national record of achievement folder obviously.

  43. presterjohn7171 Avatar

Educational and business related certificates and awards belong on the wall for sure but keep them in your office, study or den. They don’t belong in your main living space.

  44. GooseyDuckDuck Avatar

If you have a home office then maybe, otherwise a hard no.

  45. AdhesivenessLost151 Avatar

Put them in the bog if you want to put them somewhere . That’s the correct room for things you have to do in order to be able to do other things you enjoy more. Like finance qualifications and ablutions.

  46. Active-Answer1858 Avatar

I think it’s a nice thing to do, it’s not just for children. My dad’s in his 60s and became a fellow of the royal society of chemistry, we hung that up next to our childhood paintings.

  47. asphytotalxtc Avatar

It’s not exactly a certificate but I spent some years working with a fairly well known aerospace firm, I’ve got all the patches from the missions I worked on in a frame on the wall in my office.

Don’t want to come across a bit knobbish, I’m just really proud of them and that time in my life. And really, they make a good talking point if someone ever asks about them.

If you’re proud of it, display it! It’s your own home.. I display mine out of a sense of pride, you should too.

  48. MysteriousCod12 Avatar

Many years ago someone asked one of our lecturers whether he put his certificates up in his office and he said “no, because I’m not a fucking dentist”

  49. AdPrevious2802 Avatar

I hung my divorce certificate on my wall, cheers me up every single time. So go for it.

  50. SmartPipe3882 Avatar

First thing you see when you come into my house is my Silver Swimming Turtle 25m Certificate from 1994.

  51. Petcai Avatar

If it’s something you’re proud of, no matter what, go ahead.

However, if it’s a professional certificate for the job you’re currently doing, wouldn’t you hang it in your office at work? Reassurance for clients that you are actually qualified and not some random gimp guessing what to do!

  52. SparkyWarbler Avatar

They’re your certificates, do what you want with them. Being proud of something you’ve accomplished is absolutely okay!

  53. doublemaxim147 Avatar

You mean you don’t have your national record of achievement with you at all times to show to prospective employers/romantic partners/law enforcement officers? /s

But seriously, your house your rules.

  54. Evieveevee Avatar

In your study/office yes. Anywhere else and you’re a wanker.

  55. FennGirl Avatar

In the study or the downstairs toilet seem to be the traditional choices. I’ve got my degree and my partner’s professional accolades up on the landing which hasnt caused us any awkwardness or drama.

  56. premium_bawbag Avatar

Whilst studying my masters I travelled a lot and worked full time alongside it and my thesis got published – all of that ended up with me getting a new job in the field I studied and doubled my salary

You’re damn right I hung that masters degree in my home office

  57. FreshPrinceOfH Avatar

Only if it’s in your office.

  58. thefilmforgeuk Avatar

If you have a downstairs toilet that’s the place to put them according to Jeremy clarkson

  59. VioletDime Avatar

Go for it. We’ve actually put a couple of things up in the downstairs loo. A number of our friends have done the same, including sports awards and medals, so it’s a bit of a running joke.

It’s funny when a guest comes out of the toilet and randomly says something like ‘congrats on that charity cycle ride in 2021’

  60. twonaq Avatar

If you had to put effort in to do something why not proudly display that on your wall? If you have a home office it’s probably better there than in your living room but whatever you decide be proud.

  61. JGG5 Avatar

I hang my doctoral diploma in my home office, because I spent ten bloody years earning the damn thing.

  62. showmeyourkillface Avatar

I’ve got my degrees and chartership certs on my wall in my home office, and they are there entirely for my own benefit.
On reflection they are behind me on Teams meetings, like right over my head, which makes me look a tool but that is incidental. Me also being a tool is also incidental.

  63. Stralau Avatar

If it’s your grandad’s or something, I think that’s probably ok as an object of interest.

If you have an office, and are a lawyer or a doctor or something offering advice- also fine. Your case might fit into this one.

Otherwise, probably a bit of a knob.

  64. -Po-Tay-Toes- Avatar

I personally wouldn’t. But then again I have a picture of Vecna from stranger things in the form of Shrek (Shrekna) on my wall.

  65. Lonely-Job484 Avatar

Toyed with framing my fellow and chartered certs and hanging in my office, but would probably position outside of camera view for calls if I do (so as not to look a knob)

  66. Asayyadina Avatar

The correct place for such things is on the wall downstairs loo.

  67. TheMonkeyInCharge Avatar

Worked with a rat-bastard of a man who put ‘BSc’ at the end of his name on every email. We called him Rimmer.

Have some self awareness and sense of humour about it and you be fine. Downstairs loo is the perfect place for them.

  68. bartread Avatar

It’s totally fine. Plenty of people do it. Plus – and more importantly – it’s your house, so do what you like.

  69. OddlyDown Avatar

I have some of mine in my study. More than anything they remind me a time I really enjoyed and the friends I made. When I was a student there weren’t digital cameras and there’s very few photos from the time, so the number of reminders I have are few. It’s nice that the certificates are in nice frames too.

More generally, it’s a bit sad how many people here say displaying them is ‘naff’. As a nation we are weirdly anti-intellectual – I’m sure we’d all do better if recognising academic achievement was more widespread. My parents didn’t go to university but my first girlfriend’s dad had a PhD – it was framed in his study (along with a lot of books). I found it inspiring seeing it coming from a family where we didn’t have that. Don’t dismiss what pride in academic achievement can do for others, especially if you have kids.

  70. EndPsychological2541 Avatar

I’ve got a certificate from my current company hanging up in my downstairs toilet.

    That’s pride right there.

  71. Tennonboy Avatar

Office or toilet is fine, anywhere else is a no. But have to say I never put any of mine up retired now so pretty pointless

  72. The_Deadly_Tikka Avatar

See non-issue hanging it up above the desk or in an office. Anywhere else in the house looks a little weird

  73. Lazer_beak Avatar

I find them interesting and don’t associate it with being a knob , anyone that has a problem is just being hipster,

  74. No_Atmosphere8146 Avatar

It’s better than hanging up a flag. At least you’ve had to do something to earn the pride you have in those certificates.

  75. Nuo_Vibro Avatar

It’s your home, do what you want.

I would hold off on the cycling proficiency certificate like.

  76. Responsibility_Trick Avatar

Hang it in the downstairs loo. Perfect humblebrag location.

  77. Rhodeytoasty Avatar

Eventually, someone will think you’re a knob, but as others have said, they can take a hike

  78. Select_Fig_31 Avatar

Fellowship sounds like a big deal especially in your line of work. Behind your desk sounds fine tbh. It’s your home. Congrats

  79. cardiffman100 Avatar

I think it makes you look like a knob to put them on your wall. I put my qualification post-nomials in my work email signature. My certificates are in a cupboard in the cylindrical holders they came in. I only get them out to scan them if an employer needs to see them before offering a job. Nobody’s zooming in close enough to your certificates on the wall to read what they actually say so there’s little point having them there.

  80. KindlyFirefighter616 Avatar

    Bell end.

Only acceptable place for it is the back of a rarely used toilet door.

  81. Constant-Screen1939 Avatar

So I heard that some people hang them (alongside other awards for sports or military) in guest bathrooms.

The main reason for that is so it doesn’t come across as bragging (as just in the bathroom), but whenever guests to the house use the bathroom, they will see the accolades.

While not suggesting you do that, it’s an option!

  82. stevebehindthescreen Avatar

Honestly, who cares what anyone else thinks. You obviously care about your achievement so put it up, if anyone cares enough to say anything negative, are they really worth having around you?

If anyone you have around is actually a true friend they won’t have anything negative to say at all.

  83. Jesisawesome Avatar

    knob, sorry my friend

  84. 80Peta Avatar

I have so many certs I just shove them in a drawer. If I see someone put these things up framed in their home, then I tend to think, “uh oh, hope they don’t try to draw my attention to them because I really don’t care they passed some course etc”

  85. ghodsgift Avatar

Hang it where you want, but if its anywhere outside of a home office, then anyone visiting is 100% thinking youre a knob.

Its up there with people who put BSc Hons on their email/LinkedIn – gives me the ick. Especially when its an engineer or something, where its assumed you have that as a bare minimum.

  86. Annika_Desai Avatar

My partner has a masters and lots of qualifications. Dude is too humble. I encourage him to put his achievements on the wall. If I had a masters, I’d have that framed and in my living room 🤗 It’s weird and quite lame if people are annoyed by this, it’s just jealousy. We can be proud of our achievements without being a total jerk about it. I oil paint, I have some up on my walls. When people say oh, this is nice, I feel good and proud to say I painted them. When I cook a yummy meal, I feel good and proud when people go oh wow, this is yummy, you’re such a good cook. I see hanging certificates up the same. It’s a wonderful achievement 🤗

  87. gr33nday4ever Avatar

  88. Entire-Emotion-819 Avatar

Who cares what anyone else thinks, especially if you’re proud of what you achieved.

  89. Intrepid_Bearz Avatar

I’d think it was a bit weird and fishing for praise, but I’ve grown up very much with the keep your head down and don’t stand out from the crowd mentality. So much so that so don’t even know wheee my degree certificate is, let alone have it displayed anywhere.

  90. Last-Deal-4251 Avatar

Why the hell not, you should be proud of yourself!

  91. Cheeseoid_ Avatar

We have a certificates wall in the study with degrees and royal college memberships. It’s our achievements wall and it’s purely for our own satisfaction. Neither of us have particularly good self-esteem so it’s a nice personal reminder for us that we have achieved something and even nicer to see our certificates mixed in together as a reminder of our achievements as a pair – we needed each other to get us through

If visitors think negatively I couldn’t give a f*ck. I spent 9 years at university so you’re damn right I’m going to have something to show for it (because my salary definitely doesn’t!!)

  92. Braylien Avatar

  98. innerbrat Avatar

Funny story – in 2019 I re-decorated my home office.

Up to that point I only ever used video calls to Skype (remember when that was a verb?) my best friend in the US every week to watch TV together. And sometimes I’d leave projects I was working on on the shelves behind me so she made a joke about how I sometimes looked like a talking head on a documentary, with a background to make me look like an expert.

So. When I re-decorated, I leaned into that. Got a custom frame for all my degree certificates, bought box files that looked like false books. Designed my backdrop to be as pretentious as possible so I looked like a self-important prat. It was an in-joke between me and my friend. After all, who else was ever going to see this private room in my home? The only person I ever had a video call with was in on the joke.

    This was in 2019.

(However, though I have told that story many times, sometimes defensively, I dont think anyone is seriously judging me for having the certificates framed. Its just home decor and what would I do with them otherwise?)

  99. moondust1959 Avatar

I hang framed certificates in the office, both academic and work related, and I frame menus that i’ve enjoyed and hang them in the dining room.

  100. Through__Glass Avatar

  107. Aivellac Avatar

Put it on a table in your office maybe but if it’s displayed anywhere else in the house you’re a knobhead. If it’s hanging on the wall in the office you are the lesser version but still a knob.

  108. chaingaurd Avatar

I have my certificate of ordained. In the church of the latter day dude. Up in my front room and in my garage. They are photo copy’s mind as the original is in my safety deposit box.

  109. inevitable_dave Avatar

Professional and important awards and certifications are perfectly fine around your desk or office. Crap and amusing ones are for the toilet.

  110. Prediterx Avatar

I’ve got my BSc in a picture frame in my living room.

Was a proud moment and I wanted to to be reminded of all the hard work that went into it.

  111. More_Dependent742 Avatar

It’s a bit unusual (as in I don’t know anyone who does it), but it’s your house so go for it if you want to.

Doing it in your workplace is something I only see in American TV shows and it always looks so try-hard.

  112. insertitherenow Avatar

I once ordered some fake degree certificates in odd subjects from a dodgy online seller. They look like the real thing. Used to have them hung up in the toilet. Felt all smart people thinking I had a degree in Archaeology and Anthropology from Oxford.

  113. Justan0therthrow4way Avatar

You’re gonna look like a right knob if you hang them in your front room. In your office that’s fine.

  114. More_Dependent742 Avatar

Actually screw it, I’ve changed my mind. I lost mine and had to get them reissued when I suddenly needed them years later (costing time, money and energy). If you hang them up, you won’t lose them. Hang them up.

  115. Plenty-Network-7665 Avatar

Not displaying the certificates that recognise the hard work of your achievements is anti-academic in my view. Display away and be proud.

The certificate i am most proud of is a diploma that is required for progression in my (medical) career. Everyone in my specialty has it, but at the time I achieved it i was going through a realy tough time with my dad having recently done, my mum struggling with this and my marriage ina bad place.

    Display away!

  116. Teawillfixit Avatar

If it makes you happy then do it. It’s your home and your certificate. Homes should display what makes you happy imo.

(Mine are somewhere in a box, aside from some ridiculously niche pgdip in education that work recently made me do, which is currently in the cutlery draw. That said I’m just a grouch – still at uni 15 years later, although thabkfully not a student – reminders of uni at home just make me feel trapped at work/the unending hell that is HE today – I do weirdly have my PADI cert/card on display though, that one brings me happy, proud vibes).

  122. katie-kaboom Avatar

Perfectly fine as long as it’s somewhere suitably humble. Many people hang them in their office, but the downstairs loo is also acceptable.

  123. Oapekay Avatar

I’ve got my ‘show-off wall’ in my home office with the various certificates belonging to me and my wife, but I specifically had it on the one wall that would be impossible to see on a Teams call so I’d never have the temptation to show off.

  124. threeca Avatar

When I began competing in the ttrs maths competitions, I was going to hang every winning award but the teacher left after only one competition, did get a sumdog award instead for some reason when I did nothing there.

My degree is so hilariously useless (music business degree, work in the music industry, never needed it, no one ever asked, never even needed a CV to mention it on) that I binned the certificate.

And even I would say 100% yes, put that certificate on the wall if you want. It’s a great achievement and you should be proud of it.
