I mean on purpose – probably not.
I know someone who severed their own tongue in a downhill biking accident. It was stitched back on and he’s doing fine now.

In cases of involuntary movements like an accident, someone seizing, being hit with an object, etc. sure. Also have heard of people who are suffering from extreme psychological issues, such as psychosis have bitten chunks of tongue out. But an otherwise “sane” person, deliberately choosing to bite off their tongue, it’s pretty much impossible. Similar to biting off ur own finger. Our jaws have the strength to quite easily bite through your finger, bone and all. But our brains stop us.

For sure. Some seizures cause flexion of the muscles. This means your tongue may stick out and your jaw may clench.

Pretty unsettling thought, thanks for that.

On purpose no, your brain would stop you, during a seizure for example it’s very much something that happens

Yes. Apparently happens to people who are unable to feel pain

Yes, it’s possible to bite off your own tongue but it would be hard to get it cleanly off as it’s a very strong muscle. You will not be able to taste anything on tastebuds that don’t exist any longer.

I bit completely through my tongue in a car accident when I was little. I was missing multiple baby teeth at the time, so didn’t bite it completely off. Just hurt like a mofo while it healed. No scarring or issues with it now. God that accident was terrible. My mom hit the metal clothes hook in back with her head, my Aunt had a heart attack and my uncle had multiple facial burns and broken bones from the air bag. We were hit by a drunk driver. It was an 80 something Lincoln Continental I believe we were riding in.
