Is it possible to swing a 50lb hammer?

r/

I have this special bar where I can attach a weight to it and it basically looks like a hammer. Right now the weight is 45 pounds plus the bar. So is it possible to swing a 50lb hammer? If I get stronger enough?

I don’t see why not, 50 pounds is heavy but shouldn’t be that heavy

You’ll have it hold it very close to the hammer head, if you try to swing it from the handle, it’s basically a lever working against you and the perceived weight can be many times heavier. You could swing it like a shotput.

But regardless, it’ll also be very slow and exhausting to actually use. Even the heaviest sledgehammers top out at around 20lbs, with most being around 4-8lb.

But I don’t doubt that it’s doable if you’re strong enough.

Meh, just lift it up, let it fall and use your strength to accelerate it further and guide it to where its supposed to land. If you can lift 50lbs you can “swing” it. This is how railroad workers use those huge hammers to hammer the spikes. You let the hammer’s mass do the work for you, and you just add a bit of force and guidance to where the mass lands.

Knew a guy into demolition, easily 6.5 foot high and well built, saw him in a builders merchant pickup a 45 pound wedge splitter and a twirled it like it was a kids toy.
I still have one for splitting wood, needs both hands to use
