So I’m an international student at a British University. My university hosts formal Dinners for students. This year I wanted to copy the ensemble of Diana’s epic revenge dress for one of the formals. Would that be too much and tacky or do you guys think it’s a good idea? I love princess D’s fashion btw. Can you guys give me objective and honest advice about this ?

It’s iconic
I wouldn’t recommend copying the exact dress or styling, as it might be seen as a costume interpretation when the instructions were “formal”. Plus, as it’s called “revenge dress”, they might read into it and interpret that you are taking revenge on an ex ? or something
I agree that a black dress like that would be formal enough, and that hers was epic.
Something important to remember, too : if you copy the original, even if it is the exact same, you will not be able to emulate the original version, which has been idealised by nostalgia. Kim Kardashian, even if all had gone well (not destroying anything), she would’ve only been a pale imitation to Marilyn Monroe in the eyes of most people.
Plus, you wouldn’t be able to get a high quality copy of the dress, and people would probably notice it.
Take elements from it and make them yours. I recommend vintage second hand stores, or even charity shops if you have extra time. The first ones often have formal dresses, the second ones might have a hidden gem stashed away, waiting for someone to ask for it.
Here’s how you decide!

Ehh at a British university, it could come off as basically cosplay, especially if done by an international student, as it’s such an iconic look. If these are seen as a serious event, I wouldn’t, or at least keep it as very lightly inspired by.
I had to google what it was and I was alive when it was worn. Is Princess Di so popular with the kids these days that they’d recognize it and know the story behind it?
