Is it weird for me to find the phrase “educate yourself/them/he/her etc” uncomfortable?

r/

I’ve always hated this phrase with a burning passion even when it’s not directed to me personally and I feel like there’s been an increasing use of it recently. I can’t put my foot on why I dislike it can someone explain why or am I just being a snowflake?

I don’t know I need to know about who hurt your foot and why the snowplows can’t stop you

Maybe it depends on the context in which it is used. Because sometimes it may be phrases in a good way, like we often hear in podcasts, but sometimes when it is directed to a person, it may be said not quite politely. So perhaps you have heard it in not quite positive contexts and how this phrase has a negative association for you

But it’s just my guess, to be honest

Just a polite way to call someone the r word.

“Educate yourself” is usually uttered by the “do your own research” crowd where the “research” involves watching videos on Facebook that feeds their confirmation bias, instead of actually imbuing knowledge.

“educate yourself” is increasingly used by conspiracy theorists trying to get you into weird rabbit holes. In addition to the education itself being pretty suspect, the phrase in conversation usually is like an entire dismissal of any dialogue which can feel bad if you hoped to have an earnest conversation.

In toxic right wing circles it means “go down the same conspiracy theory rabbit hole that I went down”.

In certain toxic left wing contexts it means “I want to imply that I read many books on this subject, but I can’t name a single book you should read on it, either because I haven’t read any myself or because I would feel vulnerable endorsing any specific author’s views rather than just smugly shooting down other people’s views”

I feel people say this phrase when they know they’ve been bested 😂 like a sore loser!

No, that’s not weird. The phrase is used dismissively.

Why did you put them/he/her after educate yourself? Is that part of the phrase? If so, I’ve never seen that addition

For me, it’s an automatic trigger that the entire post can be safely disregarded.
