Yes, the only similarity is that they call themselves Republicans. Conservatives are fiscally/socially conservative, maga have some conservative ideals but they aren’t anchored to them and in the end they are just populists.
No, all conservatives and all Republicans want to make America great again. Lower taxes, balanced budgets, smaller government, aggressive fossil fuel development, peace through strength foreign policy and a closed border.
It’s hard to say because definitions are often based on how words are used, and today most people will say MAGA is “conservative”.
But then how does MAGA compare to people who used to be called “conservative”? People like George H W Bush who believed in peace through strength, credibility, and diplomacy. People who pushed for spending cuts but who also understood Chesterton’s Fence. People who understood that norms and customs are important to a functioning government in addition to written laws.
One of the big policy differences between MAGA and Conservatives is on Ukraine – MAGA seems to have a visceral hatred for Ukraine, probably stemming from their apparent corrupt support of Biden when he was VP. Conservatives support Ukraine defending itself and are willing to call Russia the aggressor.
I would say there’s no way to really answer this question because conservative can mean many different things. You would need to come up with a clear and specific definition of conservative or conservativism before you could answer the question so it’s kind of pointless otherwise .
Many people who call themselves conservatives support Trump. There are very few if any people who would call themselves liberals who support Trump. So obviously there is a connection. But there are conservatives who don’t support Trump. It’s as simple as that.
Many republicans have stopped calling themselves conservatives because there’s little left that we want to conserve.
Personally, I want to “progress” toward smaller government. I’m at odds with old-guard conservatives in my state that want to uphold their status quo at all costs.
Unfortunately not anymore but yes, maga really isn’t even conservative in the traditional since. Family values, respect and one’s word no longer hold any value in the maga party, the Conservative Party used to at least have public facing standard on how a man or country should openly act. Not anymore. I’m conservative, but being grouped with maga is driving me further and further away from the party. The values of maga no longer align with mine, I used to feel Trump could do some real good, but that relied on the gop and his constituents keeping him in line/accountable which obviously is no longer the case. It’s wild seeing people who used to have similar beliefs and sense of patriotism as me let their hate for the radical left cause them to be completely content seeing rights, due process, checks and balances and veteran jobs deleted from our system. It’s wild.
During 45’s first term I was sitting at a table at a NJ diner with an older conservative couple from our congregation I was friendly with while I waited for my daughter and they waited for our rabbi on a Sunday morning religous school breakfast.
I don’t recall how it came up, probably a news report on TV, but I said something about Trump. They made sure to tell me that just because they were conservartive did not mean they were MAGA.
I’ve lost track of them as we have moved on in life. I can understand voting for 45, if they did, before souring on him as he was different.
Republican and Democrat are political parties, established organizations with their own platforms. Conservatism and Liberalism are political ideologies, think a platform on the individual level. MAGA is an ideology rooted in Conservatism. Traditional Conservatism is based on the idea of as little federal power as possible. Most Traditional Conservatives believe that the federal government should only hold as much power as is needed to maintain and preserve the nation, all else should be left to the states.
MAGA believes that the federal government should act only in the interest of its citizen’s first. It’s based on the idea that up until now, the federal government has used its citizens as an ATM to benefit everyone except the Citizens.

Many types of conservatives. MAGA is a populist anti-progressive movement.
Here’s a prime example: libertarians wanted to end the department of Ed and replace it with nothing, just stop all those funtions entirely.
Trump “ended the DoEd” by breaking up the funtions to other departments. But still wants the feds to push a national agenda in education.
So basically, they claimed a “libertarian victory” when not actually removing a single function. Just made it harder to actually run.
Conservatives are for minimizing government authority and footprint. MAGA is the opposite.
