It will not let me edit the flair, but a question about resources

Specifically wanting to look up who calls me and if the number is tied to someone I know or a company near me.

Nope, not really, not unless they willingly publish it.

I use truepeoplesearch.com for this sort of thing, keep in mind phone numbers are easily spoofed.

No, I don’t know of any sites that are free like they used to be. But the paid sites, in my experience, aren’t a scam.

Googling the number is likely to bring up the company name, so long as it’s out there on the internet (whether the number is intentionally published or is unlisted).

Sometimes Googling the number will lead you to who it is.

Melissa.com is a good one, but I mostly use it for reverse address, though it says it has a reverse number search. you can just make an account and you get a bunch of free credits per month to do lookups.

Often if some scammer calls you, they’re spoofing the number they’re calling from so it’s not really their real number. I let calls go to voicemail unless I recognize it.

We used to have something called The yellow pages(phone book). But I don’t think they have any of that anymore in any state. As far as I’m aware. But I could be wrong.

Google used to work but nowadays scammers will spoof real numbers with your area code.

The problem, even if you get a website, they will tell you information of who owns that phone number at least would sit either from a lot of times when you’re getting calls from telemarketers or companies contacting you to try to sell you something they mask the number anyway so they’re using a fake number which if you try to call it back nine times at 10 the number you call back was not even the number they called you from

If you want their name, and reliably, you’re going to have to pay.

Use this if you’re looking fir basic into and/or spam likelihood.

I use the Mr Numbers app but it may not be exactly what you are looking for. It tells you caller ID and also other users can report/leave comments on numbers. Like if it’s a spam caller you can leave “spam car warranty” or “fake debt collector”. I mainly use this app because it blocks all calls that aren’t in my contacts list

If they don’t leave a VM, then I consider it not important if it’s not a number that’s in my phone. I don’t answer any calls from people/businesses I don’t know. I’ve mostly found it useless to look them up because most scams and marketing are calling from mobile #s (real or spoofed). Sometimes you can just google and if it’s a valid business with a landline especially, it’ll come up. But rarely, like, 1 in 100 phone calls. Most of them are mobile and you generally can’t look them up because they change too often.

My rule is that if they don’t leave a message, they weren’t important enough to worry about. If they do leave a message and it’s no one I know, I google the words in the message to see if it’s a scam.

Just google the number. If it’s a business it pops up. Sometimes it will tell you whose line it is if it’s a personal(rare). If it’s a common robocall/scam there are websites with that info as well.

    If it’s (area code)-(area code)-XXXX it’s likely a robocall.

Edit: If they don’t leave a voicemail, it wasn’t important, a robocall, or a scammer. I never answer my phone to a number I don’t have saved/doesn’t show on caller ID.

If you spend a few bucks (one time no subscription bs) then there are sites that will let you search data breaches. If they ever used the phone number when signing up for something its quite likely to be there, along with usernames, email addresses, physical addresses etc. I don’t want to advertise or recommend any particular one but basically you want a site that lets you search hashes and or breaches

Around Covid I switched my old cell number when I switched my job (old clients had that number).

I specifically chose a number from a state I do not live.

When I see the spoofed telemarketer number from that state where my phone number is from, I instantly know it’s a telemarketer.

One of the smartest things I ever did.
