Is weed really not addictive?

r/

Used to be a huge stoner in my college days. Now I’m 28 and over time I’ve just smoked less and less weed.

Last couple months randomly got back into weed and had a bit of binge, smoking probably 2-3 times a day and always before bed. This went on for about 2 months.

Ran out of weed a few days ago and decided it’s time to cut back. Man it’s been shit, I’ve been anxious and tired and feeling not as good as usual.

Forget about sleep, I’ve slept like 4 hours a night the last 3 nights and I find myself tossing and turning, anxious, and waking up really sweaty.

This almost exactly mirror my symptoms from when I quit nicotine for good last year. Maybe just like 70% of the intensity.

It’s really not addicting??

It is very much addictive to a relatively small number of people.

  2. SomeDoOthersDoNot Avatar

Cannabis use disorder is very much a real thing.

  3. ForScale Avatar

    It’s addictive.

Weed addiction looks like constantly thinking about being high, feeling like you can only do or enjoy things high, needing it to sleep, etc.

Withdrawal can be depressed mood, feelings of boredom or restlessness, anxiety, vivid dreams (possibly unpleasant), sweating, etc.

  4. snowtown69 Avatar

I’m for sure addicted to it , not the smoking aspect but just that first 30 minuets , after that I’m always bummed I did smoked cause I start burning out , then it’s just a snowball effect from there

  5. eggs-benedryl Avatar

Do the same with caffine and you’ll likely feel the same way.

You aren’t going to die without weed. You shouldn’t be huddled up in the fetal position riding through the spins. You’ll likely just feeling, “man it’d be nice if I were stoned right now”

Everyone ITT is gonna tell you it’s super addictive. People are overcorrecting after our peers said it was never ever ever addictive. It’s as addictive as anything else that gave you dopamine regularly and reliably and suddenly stops.

  6. Physical_Complex_891 Avatar

Its habitually addictive, not physically. I’ve smoked daily for 20+ years and currently 7 months pregnant. I had no issues quiting for pregnancy.

  7. do_shut_up_portia Avatar

Check out r/leaves – very eye opening. People there report some nasty withdrawal symptoms and can’t seem to quit

  8. SlideItIn100 Avatar

    It’s quite addictive.

  9. adj-n_number Avatar

Im addicted to it right now! So no. And those withdrawals are a bitch; the only cure is time, but it really is the cure, just trust yourself and stay committed to staying off it!

  10. boxerboy96 Avatar

I think it depends on the person. I smoked every single night for a few years, roughly a thousand consecutive nights. One day I decided fuck it, not gonna smoke again. I had some moderate psychological symptoms and no physical symptoms of withdrawal. After a few days, I was back to normal.

  11. AriasK Avatar

Lol who the hell told you it’s not addictive? Of course it’s addictive. That’s a commonly known scientific fact. You are suffering addiction withdrawals right now.

  12. Novae224 Avatar

Its addictive… its not herroin additive, but still addictive

  13. Equivalent-Pie-7148 Avatar

As a stoner for 4 years now, it’s addictive.

But in the same sense caffeine is addictive, like a chemical dependency on it can be built. Not like how opium is addictive

  14. tiredhippo Avatar

It’s habit forming but won’t create a physical dependency

  15. PromptAcrobatic3186 Avatar

I’m addicted but I do intense running so it’s helps with not feeling like a bum.

  16. ArtiesHeadTowel Avatar

It’s not chemically addictive like heroin or alcohol, but just like any behavior, people can get dependent or addicted to the act… Think sex, gambling, food, shopping, etc.

There aren’t really any withdrawals aside from feeling a bit grumpy for a few days.

  17. Comprehensive-Menu44 Avatar

I’d say it’s more of a dependency than an addiction, though addiction can be psychologically linked to it if it’s something you can’t stop thinking about/spend all your money on

  18. Longjumping-Salad484 Avatar

no, but getting high on weed and playing basketball is highly addictive

  19. Hour_Lock568 Avatar

The important point is that it CAN be addictive – it’s not addictive in itself. If you have an addictive personality, you’ll be more prone to addiction.

I regularly take 7-10 day tolerance breaks (and so does almost everyone I know) and I’ve never experienced withdrawal symptoms. I don’t smoke when I travel (mainly because I just don’t have any) and I’ve never had a problem. I’m going on a 10-day trip with no access to weed in a few weeks and I have no reservations about it, nor do I expect to have any withdrawal symptoms.

    TL;DR, everyone’s different.

Weed is addictive. Just like alcohol is addictive for some, weed can be addictive. My partner has a weed addiction. He is in a recovery program right now and still wants to smoke and I worry he will get back into it in the future.

His symptoms were anger and frustration when he could smoke. Planning his day around being able to smoke. Letting it interfere with his responsibilities.

Your brain gets used to it being your go to when something is bothering him.

It takes time but the urges and effects will die down.

Alright let’s get some insight here. Weed is activating your dopamine receptors. They are lab rats without dopamin receptors, which didn’t care at all for THC. But rats with receptors got addicted. So it is evidence, that this mechanism is making you addicted.

Dopamin makes you happy. By constantly pushing your dopamine you are getting two main effects:

    1. a resistances for dopamine. “Normal” nice feelings are not exiting enough anymore. It is like adrenaline junkies. They need more and more to feel alive, because the normal existence is not enough.

    2. and this is more crucial: you are loosing your stuff which does activate the dopamine receptors. Since weed does produce that and it sublements the activation particles. Your body looses the “activation” particles for dopamine, since it does not need to produce it anymore. That takes a long time for weed, but it does happen with heavy usage over time. This makes you actually addicted, since you are not able to activate your dopamine receptors anymore by yourself. You are literally not able to be happy anymore. And that’s fucking your mind in a lot of ways.

The second part is happening with a lot of drugs. Ecstasy does the same thing but faster. Heroine is not using dopamine but endorphin/opiod receptors. They are responsible for pain and opdiods are produced a little bit all the time in your body. If you are losing this, you are literally feeling pain in your cells, since your body ist not producing opiods by itself anymore. Thats why heroine is so nasty.

To recover this ability it takes years. There are studies with monkeys. They gave them ecstasy over weeks and they did not produce dopamine anymore. After multiple years they just got back to 70% of the original value. Thats very cruel, but that’s what happening, with drug abuse.

about the same as nicotine and coffeine

u just get used to it at some point and start to miss it

  23. HeyIts-Amanda Avatar

There’s no chemical addiction. It’s a behavior addiction. I have it. When I gave up nicotine, i totally srarted consuming more cannabis. I love the ritual, the hand to mouth, the worrying less.

  24. Substantial-Seat6752 Avatar

I’ve smoked or vaped weed for 20 years since I was a teenager. I recently made the decision to cut down and hopefully stop entirely. It’s been really hard, I’m struggling to find joy in doing things. Having said that, it’s starting to improve after a couple of weeks of only having one or two puffs on my vape. I’m determined to be free from it this year.

  25. SoMuchGood4you Avatar

Weed is adictive but in a different way than fx morphine. I smoked daily for 15 years and stopped in January. I really feel like smoking every day and my sleep is still weird. But it isn’t in a physical way. I just really miss it and want to do it badly. Don’t overbo it or you’ll somehow spoil it.

  26. Smitty_1000 Avatar

Anything that feels good can be addictive

  27. tradingsincesilkroad Avatar

Coffee is addictive. Chocolate is addictive. The gym is addictive. Weed is certainly addictive. What addictions are you happy living with? Thats the question.

  28. AnotherBodybuilder Avatar

Anything can become addicting. Sure maybe it’s not like nicotine. Sure people can stop “whenever” they want

As I did last year after smoking every single night for a year. I spent 4 weeks after I quit having panic attacks, not sleeping, constant anxiety, and feeling like I couldn’t enjoy anything. After that subsided I now never want to go back to smoking. Because for me at least it always becomes a dependence because I love it so much lol

  29. perry147 Avatar

Almost anything can be addictive, people get addicted to anything that can make them feel good.
Is MJ more addictive than cocaine? No
Is MJ more addictive than coffee? Yes
Is MJ more addictive than sex? Maybe.

  30. Reddit-dit-dit-di-do Avatar

People say it’s not addictive bc it does really have withdrawal symptoms in the same sense as alcohol or harder drugs. But in my experience, cutting out weed can lead to anxiety, insomnia, and crazy vivid dreams. But it’s not too bad tbh.

But regardless, it can become habitual. Just like how you can get addicted to your phone or video games. Many people are addicted to weed in that sense.

  31. Hypnowolfproductions Avatar

Yes it’s addictive. Here’s a link. Many say it’s not so they can justify their habit. Many things people say are about not wanting their bad habits outed on them.

  32. HawaiiStockguy Avatar

It is not physiologically addicting since there are no withdrawal symptoms when you stop

It is for some people psychologically addicting, ie habit forming

  33. Pretty-Caramel-3197 Avatar

Did you smoke blunts? Blunt wraps have nicotine.

  34. naimely Avatar

I live in a country where weed is not legal. My best friends boy friend was a weed smoker and he insisted that weed isn’t addictive we got into a fight. Then he ran out of weed he was literally shaking because he was with my friend with another 2 days and he got no weed left. Then he bought a wine, then he left at night.

Anything can be addictive I think. Especially if they give you joy and relaxation.

  35. Uneasyguy Avatar

It is absolutely physically addictive and I can prove it unequivocally should anyone be interested.

  36. kingvolcano_reborn Avatar

My flatmate back in the day tries to stop smoking weed. It was not a pretty sight. Not sure if it is physically addictive but it is definitely psychologically addictive

  37. Cloud_Disconnected Avatar

There used to be a hard distinction between physical withdrawal and psychological withdrawal. You don’t get shakes, sweats, seizures, etc. from weed withdrawal, so it wasn’t considered “physically addictive.”

That’s outdated now, the DSM-5 recognizes Cannibas Withdrawal Syndrome, it is a clinically diagnosable condition. The idea that it is not “physically addictive” was what I was taught in school in the 80s and 90s.

  38. C1sko Avatar

Physical addiction, zero. Psychological addiction is totally real.

  39. pendragon2290 Avatar

Weed withdrawals are a thing. They aren’t typically arent has harsh as alcohol or heroin but it does happen.

Weed is addictive in the sense that you create a psychological dependency if you smoke so much for so long. When you quit anxiety raises substantially.

  40. DoctrL Avatar

    Its 100% addictive

  41. greenlungs604 Avatar

Longtime smoker and I do believe it is addictive. Not like Chris Rock new jack city addicted, but it’s something. I smoke regularly and have been for many years. I do take an extended break every 1-2 years for a couple of months. I tell myself it’s a t break, but I think it’s more to prove to myself that I can quit anytime lol. Anyways, the first 1-2 days I get strangely sweaty and anxious. It’s like I feel “off” but not sick. After that I feel fine again.

  42. slobbylumps Avatar

No weed’s not addictive bro I swear i just get super irritable whenever i go more than a few hours without it and also i cant eat without smoking first and i cant sleep unless i smoke either but bro i could totally stop at any time if i wanted, i just cant imagine my life without it. /s

  43. JordyWales Avatar

Nah it’s addictive. I quit a little over three months ago and had some withdrawal symptoms

  44. DryBeans45 Avatar

From my experience it is addicting. I had been smoking all day every day for two and a half years and a few months ago got the opportunity to be in a safe environment to stop. I’ve been sober for one month so far.

I think about it constantly. I’m eating so much and drinking (not alcohol) so much since I’ve stopped. My sleep knows no schedule. I have intense, vivid dreams that are always terrible and when I wake I have to convince myself that I’m not in that world, and feel a gigantic sense of relief when I come to. I find myself attracted to other substances since I swore it off which I must fight. I’ve relapsed twice and this is the longest I’ve gone.

I’m sure withdrawal symptoms are different for everyone but anecdotally I would say yes it is addictive and it sucks. I hope to never touch it again.

  45. BumbleBeezyPeasy Avatar

Anything and everything can be addictive. It just depends on how your brain and body react to the thing.

  46. DrDirt90 Avatar

Was a stoner in the 70’s and grew to hate it. Gave it up for 40 years. Could care less.

  47. AJnbca Avatar

It can be psychologically addictive, like people get addicted to shopping or gambling. So yes in that way I can be habitualy addictive.

The whole “weed is not addictive” thing is that is doesn’t have any chemicals are generally “physically” addictive like nicotine or alcohol is physically addictive, meth, etc…

But a person can become mentally/psychologically addicted to weed like they can to almost anything and those kinds of addiction can still be hard, can manifest in physical symptoms of withdrawal, etc…

  48. serio13196913 Avatar

If it’s not addictive, then why does everyone I know who does it have to do it every day?

  49. Polengoldur Avatar

you have an addictive personality issue. you would react the same way to alcohol, or gambling, or opening yu-gi-oh cards if you treated those things the same way.

  50. Jealous_Western_7690 Avatar

    Anything can be addictive psychologically.

  51. Y0___0Y Avatar

It’s not addictive in that you won’t get the shakes or feel violently ill if you stop

But if you use anything that gives your brain endorphins regularly, and then suddenly stop, your brain doesn’t know what to do. It takes a month or two to settle down.

If you exercise hard, you’ll sleep a lot better.
