It’s not all in the mind; if mental strength can help overcome physical challenges, then physical problems must have equally debilitating effects on the mind.

It’s called “psychosomatic”.

€: brainfarted. You mean the opposites. Just learned that that is called “somatopsychic”. The more you know.

While they might, why must they?
“If A, then B” absolutely does not confirm the validity of “If B, then A.”
Maybe get out of the shower, dry off, and fix your body and mind.
Try thinking with a blocked nose, or a sore throat
Anyone who has physical disabilities can tell you what a detrimental effect they have on mental health.
Well, yeah. There is more and more research on the gut microbiome affecting one’s cognitive capacity, so there’s that
Ever met someone in constant pain? However nice they might be otherwise, they’re often short tempered.
Ever hear the phrase, “You’re not you when you’re hungry”?
Pretty sure sickness makes you mentally weak as well.
Well, It actually works like that.
If I understood your phrase right, for example breaking One of your leg Will let you limping not only until you heal, but even After because your brain could still believe there Is a problem and learn a pattern to walk without hurting
The body/mind impact is clearly visible in a woman’s menstrual cycle. Many of us can predict our mental struggles by charting the physical symptoms.
Jesse, what the fuck are you talking about?
I’ve got 2 sleeves of tattoos, a chest piece, a nose ring, 3 bulged disks, a torn muscle, and a failing pancreas. Absolutely none of that stacks up to the mental torture of not remembering my Grandaddy’s voice, or knowing I’ll never hear “Hey honey!” When I get home from work again.
The brain is a prison and I’ll take the next train out.
Yes… whatever else one might believe, here on earth anyway…
The mind can cannot exist without the brain, and the brain is a physical organ that depends on inputs from the body to function.
Positive thinking can get you up and moving when you’d rather not, and being up and moving can lead to a sharper mind, but no mental trick is going to erase extensive damage.
Any teacher can tell you how futile it is to try to learn while very hungry or sleep deprived, or struggling for air.
I agree with what you’re getting at, but logically this doesn’t work.
Just because X affects Y doesn’t mean Y affects X.
Hey so I am chronically ill and I can confirm. Once I reach certain levels of pain I instantly become suicidal, and if I am not incredibly careful (aka budgeting my energy super strategically to the point where barely anything gets done) then I will reach that pain level on a default basis. It’s fun!
Professional chess players burn a ton of calories during tournaments …similar to physical activity.
From my personal experience I think it’s a yes and no affair.
I’ve had instances of pushing through serious injury while working towards a goal like saving for a house and was not about to give up countless 12+hr shifts because I wrecked my knee while working a physical and mental job. think dragging around heavy tools and equipment while calculating mix ratios, flow rates, fluid weight and pressures)
But I’ve also had my allergies seriously throw off my mental ability working a monotonous job.
Small cuts anger me and can throw off my day but I’ve pushed through not taking off my now red glove because I really didn’t want to know what state my hand is in until I got through my part of the job.
I lived with an infection for months where my wisdom tooth grew into the next tooth while I saved for surgery. some days it was like background noise, other days it was all I could think about but it was always the same pain.
In the same way I’ve had depression come out as a dull soreness in all my muscles. It’s all connected and I would love to know exactly how.
Not only in the sense that physical pain makes you feel mentally weak, physical strength can make you feel mentally strong. Doing some stretches or even a workout can do wonders for motivation
It IS all in the mind. The mind however, is not a car that you, the owner drives well or badly. It is affected by your body chemicals as well as innate states, and the “strength” of mind is not something that you control.
So some people are “strong” because they are configured that way, and others are not because they are not able to be, whether due to current circumstances or innate nature. It is a matter of luck. Brain fog and hormone based mood and personality changes are all real things.
Plus, when someone is “strong” often people will show “admiration” for their resilience, which translates to “I am so glad you take care of your problems yourself and I don’t need to do anything”. Don’t do that. Offer small bits of help anyway, and don’t mention the strength. We learn how real your admiration is when you fail at the first small request. And it gets goddamn tiring keeping your knees locked to keep walking forward, knowing there isn’t anyone to catch you if you crumple, just those who will say ” But they were so strong!”
Consider then the effects of the 40 hour work week, especially in regards to hard labor. Catch-22 because the harder you work the less youd notice your declining performance.
You can’t meditate away a kidney stone, I promise I tried once.
If mental strength can turn me into a superhero during leg day, then I’m pretty sure my sore back is plotting a coup against my brain.
