I’ve been on here for 3 years and still don’t know how any of this works

r/

Tbh I’ve been on Reddit off and on for the last 3 years and am absolutely lost on how any of this works.

I mostly just use this for supporting animators and finding random nudes of niche celebrities.

How do I even gain Karma? What are Bananas? Why can I only post so much or so little in a given community? Why am I alive? What is the purpose of wasps? I am so confused in more ways than one.

Please send help

Hahahahaha! I feel you! I’ve been here for a few months only and don’t understand half of it, but I’m pretty sure in 3 years I still won’t know how this works. I’m really not bothered about it and just around for curiosity and if I see any interesting posts/questions.

You gain karma by getting likes on your comments, you lose karma by getting downvoted

The bananas and other awards you can monetize after you get a certain amount I think?

Some communities only allow people to post that have a certain number of karma cuz bots and shit like that

I’m still trying to figure out why the last comment in the thread is cut off.
It bothers me & Reddit wasn’t doing this on Thursday.
    Why reddit, why.

    I couldn’t care less

Reddit really out here feeling like a chaotic RPG you accidentally joined at level 3 with no tutorial.

Karma? That’s Reddit’s version of internet clout upvotes = good karma, downvotes = shame. Bananas? That’s just r/wallstreetbets being unhinged again, ignore them (unless you enjoy financial anarchy). Posting limits? Reddit’s way of saying, “Earn your stripes, newbie.”

And as for wasps… yeah, still no one knows. They’re just spicy bees with anger

“How do I even gain Karma? ”
    Posting and commenting.

    “What are Bananas ”
    A joke.

“Why can I only post so much or so little in a given community? ”
Different subs decides their own rules.

    “Why am I alive?  ”
Your dad and mom did the deed.

“What is the purpose of wasps? ”
    Same as yours.

Im the same, I’ve rarely commented over the years but I’ve started commenting more and I’ve got no idea if I’ve been merrily making faux pas across the threads

I guess, screw the karma. I get downvoted due to not caring if some faceless idiot doesn’t like my opinion….

Hopefully you’ll get more karma than me!

  10. thermometerbottom Avatar

Same here! It makes absolutely no sense to me.

  11. unsolved7mystery Avatar

I don’t either some post make my jaw drop and I make a post and it gets removed sometimes I think the OP post stuff so ppl will comment and get banned example someone posted about hateful song lyrics I commented and boom I’m in trouble for answering a question just like everyone

    Wasps are super important pollinators

Allow me to regale you with Reddit lore.

Once upon a time Reddit was a link aggregator for nerds. The founder admitted that he posted most links in the beginning. Karma is a meaningless number which is supposed to show you how many people agreed with what you commented or posted. Instead it shows you how many people are part of the Reddit “hivemind”. Examples of how to get negative karma very quickly:

-Praising Elon Musk, Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, any other member of the GOP or any other billionaire (except George Soros, who is oddly the only billionaire that does things which matter with gasp more than one percent of his net worth)

-Commenting hateful things (which thankfully works as intended)

-Approving of any change to Reddit

    -Approving of Reddit’s corporate leadership

-Posting blatantly AI generated content in any form (except in AI subreddits, of course)

-Posting anything at odds with the groupthink present in every subreddit

Examples of how to get positive karma:

-Do the opposite of any of the above

-post something like “AITA for doing something every sane adult human agrees isn’t bad?” in r/AITA

-post about being depressed or having any diagnosable mental disorder

-post negatively about capitalism, work, inflation, tarriffs, how boomers ruined everything, or how the economy is in shambles (even if and especially if it’s great)

-Quote George Carlin at every available opportunity

-reference It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Office, Seinfeld, or any other sitcom known to man (except The Big Bang Theory, which is “a show about what dumb people think smart people are like” as any redditor will smugly tell you.)

A banana is used as a standard unit of measurement, because most redditors have a twelve year old’s sense of humor and maturity.

You’re alive because your parents decided to force you into this world against your will so that you would suffer for an indeterminate amount of time. /s (the /s means sarcasm, and is used to denote anything sarcastic in lieu of audible intonation.)

Assuming you mean wasps as in the insect, the purpose of wasps are as food for the tarantula hawk.

    I have no clue either

I’ve diversified but nudes are what brought me to Reddit in the first place.

The awards they have now helped give me a roadmap of what I’m “supposed to be doing” on here, but I’ve had my account for like 6 years and didn’t use it other than when I Googled something, until I needed help on a very specific issue and sure enough there was a subreddit for it. Then I realized there’s literally a sub for everything, so now when I logon my feed is tailored to my interests, from vinyl collecting to UFO’s to resources in my city and now it’s my daily go-to app.

Y’all, I just jumped to 90 Karma but dropped down to 85. Which one of you did it!? 👀 Who did I piss off already???

  19. Background-Car4969 Avatar

I can’t even keep an account from being suspended. Reddit keeps thinking I’m a bot or something.

  20. NoRightsProductions Avatar

I’ve had an account for 10 years and only started doing more than lurking shortly before the API controversy of 2023

  21. Boosterstuff3 Avatar

What do I do with karma?

  22. ittybittytinytoad Avatar

Wasps are omnivores that act as pollinators and pest control. They are also assholes, so nobody enjoys admitting that they have important ecological functions.

  23. jCait89 Avatar

Same! I’ve been sooo lost. Thankful for all the helpful info others have posted

  24. Patient_Train_1641 Avatar

I’m still trying to figure this all out too

  25. Accomplished_Yak2352 Avatar

I’m chatty. I have high karma from commenting and from upvotes.
I’ve been here for a few years.
But I still don’t completely understand when a thread says the mods have locked it for something something polls and something something up/ down votes .. I can’t even remember exactly what the message is, but I’ve seen it several times lately.
They do it moreso on subs that seek opinions like AIO.or AITA.
Idk the purpose of the action.

Also,I thought awards went away. But seems like I still see some award buying. 🤷‍♀️

I open the app. Search for answers on topics that interest me. Scroll for interesting time wasting communities ( porn mostly ) sometimes make a comment , like this, and since I don’t care about the rest of the stuff , I just log out. I just use reddit for whatever as intended and don’t let a make-believe environment worry me.

  29. Fine-Flow-1910 Avatar

I’ve also been here for 3 yrs, almost 4, and heard never even heard of karma! 🤣 and those other things you’ve mentioned. Recently,I found someone had sent me a message, and it had been there for weeks, and I was surprised cos I didn’t even know you could send direct messages to ppl

  30. Starletbliiss Avatar

Karma’s just reddit points for ppl liking ur posts n comments lol it don’t really do anything but u need some to post in certain subs. bananas r just a meme thing on some mobile app versions i think, don’t stress it. rate limits r prob just auto mod stuff so u don’t spam. but fr why do wasps exist?? they contribute nothing but pain.

  31. Fitness-housewife Avatar

I’ve only been on here for 13 days. Honestly only joined to try and promote my OF. Tried to post on a few subreddits and had my posts removed (not enough karma, or haven’t been around long enough, or my pic was too staged 🙄). It now claims I have 176 karma, but when I try and post it tells me I have -9. How would I even get negative?! Also discovered Redditors can be very mean. Posted on a glow up thread just to get berated because people think I’ve had work done and refuse to believe that Botox and filler is not “work done”. Deleted my post 🤷🏼‍♀️. Haven’t posted or commented since, until this.

Internet searches will get you MOST of these answers, but not all…

  33. VeronicaMaassen Avatar

I’m no pro at this either. I still can’t figure it all out. I know that I posted some facts on an opinionated, apparently uneducated post and got over 80 downvotes, so I removed my comment. It amazes me how many refuse to do research before forming an opinion.

  34. Outer-Suburbia Avatar

How do people get awards or the coins to buy awards, I don’t get it either and I’ve been using reddit for almost 6 years
