Hi, so I just got a call from an “officer” who didn’t introduce himself by name. He told me some of my cards were found locally and he wants me to come to the station to pick them up. It seems suspicious to me and he couldn’t tell me what cards because they are sealed in an envelope. I asked how he got my phone number and he told me because I was in a car accident I’m 2021 and they found my contact info that way. Like I said, this doesn’t sit right with me. I was looking for insight if this is a real thing that cops do and whether the call is legit. I don’t believe I’m missing anything and curious why he’s insisting I come there now to pick it up tonight. He says it will be destroyed after today.
Just got a strange call from “police”

Call the police department and tell them what happened.
Have the address? Give it to the police
As long as it is inside an actual real police station its legit. Anything else big NO NO, even bigger NO NO when they want money.
This sounds legitimate to me. You can easily call the station and ask to confirm if this is true.
I mean, did you lose some of your cards and were you in a car crash in 2021? What exactly seems off about all of this. Seems pretty typical and normal to me.
Ha ha, he’s too lazy to serve a warrant, he wants you to come in to get cuffed. A version of the old, “you won a free TV!” scam.
That’s not suspicious. He’s trying to return lost property. That’s exactly what I would do if somebody turned in random cards.
Are you missing cards?
You’d call the owner and tell them that they have until that evening to collect them and then destroy them if they don’t come tonight?
That’s the only red flag I have, we hold found property for a year.
Were you expecting a “package” in the mail that didn’t show up? 😂
You got a warrant?
Sounds like you gotta warrant.
Might want to bring some clean whites with you just in case.
Then let it be “destroyed” if you aren’t missing anything.
Call the police from a different number and ask if anybody turned anything in for you. If so then you aren’t being scammed.
Do you have warrants?
What cards?
That is a ruse, if ever there was one. Make arrangements for an agent to retrieve.
Call the department and ask if your stuff as found.
Go to the station, what is he gonna do kidnap you in a police station? If he said meet me in this random parking lot then yeah don’t go.
Well if he said the envelope was sealed how did he know the cards inside belonged to you?
An officer just left a voicemail offering to send someone to my location to give it back. Why would they do that?
If a cop calls you, he will give his name…If he doesn’t its time to hang up.
This whole thing sounds sketchy as hell.
Probably legit. Any chance you have warrants or are wanted for some other crime? Could also be a legal ruse to get you to the station.
Smh
Goes without saying, but if you have reason to stay away from ICE agents, don’t go.
Cards?
Sounds legit. He didn’t try to solicit money or any personal information. If you were actually in a car wreck in 2921 that’s corroborating information. That being said, you can look up the agency’s phone number and get what he was trying to say through dispatch or records.
You have a warrant and they are trying to see how dumb you are 😅
I’ve ID’d people and gotten contact info from prior CAD events; it’s not uncommon. I definitely would try to contact the owner before booking it, as the owner will likely never see it again.
Also, mail theft is a thing; your stuff could’ve been taken and dumped. We get calls for service all the time about mail theft and found property. Passersbyers call in found mail with people’s info, but we can’t open all we can usually do is book it as found prop and notify the postal inspector.
I mean, it sounds legit. Call the station and ask if they have an item for you and give them your name. Tell them you spoke with an officer. But if you can’t get there and he destroys it anyway…file a report. That’s just a sad excuse on his part bc he doesn’t wanna do paperwork and log it into found property/evidence, which is ridiculous
Scam, especially since some answers are scratchy
You’d be amazed at the length cops will go to in order to avoid paperwork, I’d spend an hour trying to give found property back rather than 15 minutes of reports.
Bro.. if its a precinct/station.. whats the problem?
You keep avoiding the question if you may have warrants lol
If they are meeting at the actual poloce department during normal hours, its probably legit. Getting your number from an old accident is definitely legit. Ive had cop friends i havent seen in years call me up from that. We also get calls at work all the time looking for “x” who hasn’t worked here in a decade.
Not a cop, fleet mechanic with a lot of cop friends.
Call the station and confirm or go down yourself
Sounds like they baiting you to get arrested (assuming you got warrants)
Don’t go.
Just don’t.
Better safe then sorry.
You’re obviously not missing any cards that bad.
I wouldn’t go fuck that.
Since OP is ignoring the warrants question, I’m assuming he has warrants. Or maybe could potentially be involved in something they want to question him about.
Op don’t go.
Just don’t.
You’re obviously not missing cards that bad are you?
Why risk it?
Just don’t go.
And change your number lol
If they wouldn’t give their name, I’d be suspicious.
I’ve literally messaged someone on Facebook to return their wallet. It’s weird the lengths we’ll go through and time we’ll spend to not do paperwork when it’s not needed. And since everyone else is concerned about you possibly having warrants you can always check through your state’s court website for open cases.
Seems legit to me. If your name and contact info was entered into a previous report, it can be found. Whenever I make a call like this, I usually always introduce myself first, but that’s just me.
