I’m currently trying to get into the local sheriffs office as a deputy. I have a history of service dog training and would eventually like to get into k9 handling within the department. What are some steps I can start taking to help eventually get a position within the K-9 unit. Iv already taken a k9 first aid course.

It depends on your agency, but in mine, you do a few years of patrol, start showing up on your own time to be a decoy, be liked by the team, interview for it, and get the position. In any agency, your reputation is important, so just be a good cop, be a good beat partner, don’t burn bridges, and go get what you want.
Go to a decoy school if you can get the K-9 unit to support you and start decoying
Really, your resume is already good enough to show interest. Most places don’t expect you to have the skills for the special detail you want – just the abilities. Even if you have a lot of experience they will still send you to a basic handler school with you and tour K9 partner anyhow.
Really, just establish a reputation for a solid work ethic, mature and responsible behavior, and calm under pressure. The rest will take care of itself.
5-20 years of patrol in most cases.
That or marry/fuck someone important.
I promise you, service dog training is nothing similar to explosive/ drug detection or bite work. It ties into basic obedience but that’s it.
Agency dependant honestly. You could get screwed and never get the chance, you could get lucky and get it pretty quick.
Personally, I’d find a police K9 trainer in the area and see if you can volunteer or work with them.
