Shopping as in “let’s have dinner and then walk around the mall” or shopping as in “I will take you to the store and buy you things”? Because I would be weirded out by second one, but I’ve done the first one when we wanted to have a chance to walk and talk but the weather was crappy.
That sounds very a love-bombish thing to do… If a guy spends a lot on me up front then I know he’s looking for a return on his investment. Usually no good intentions there.
Not a date, but the first time I hung out with my male best friend in real life (we’d been internet friends for years prior) we went Christmas shopping and I picked out his wife’s Christmas presents. It was honestly a wholesome experience.

Generosity can be manipulative. Sounds like he wants you to be able to owe him. I’ve had sugar daddies in the past where this was understandable and expected. I would never do this with someone who I was serious about though— it would be a huge red flag. My husband and I are equals. Taking someone shopping on a first date is not “we are equals” behavior.
