Feels condescending and self-martyring. If a person feels like they’re not in the right place to be in a relationship that’s one thing, but I can decide for myself what I deserve, y’know?
I’ve only had that said to me by men who wanted to be with me while I was in a relationship. I felt like they were trying to undermine my relationship to get with me.

Pretty sure I had that happen with someone I dated a longggg time ago. And he was so right! I did deserve better. He was one of the worst relationships I’ve had.

I’m not going to be an asshole, but if I ever head this again, I would say “It sounds like you’re in a place where a relationship isn’t best for you. I wish you all the best.”
Cause I’m not going to kick somebody when they’re down. But 9 times out of 10, when a person says something like “You deserve better” or “you’re too good for me”, what they’re trying to do is get you to fight for them. They’re pushing you away so that you go “no no! Don’t say that! You’re wonderful!” Seeing you fight for them and cling to them despite them pushing you away makes them feel loved. And then when you stick together and 3 weeks later they do something that really hurts you and you try to call them out on it, they can say “Well I warned you.”
Was in a abusive relationship for a few years, this was his classic break up thing to say. When I finally broke free of the spell, he pulled it one last time, and I gave him a hug and said “yes, and you will never find someone like me again”.
I said “I know” and I never looked back. 🙂
PS. I found my “better” years later too!
Thanks, I think I need different. This was the best I could do at the time but we’ve both changed.
At first I was heartbroken. But later, I realized they were right, and I thank them for not holding me back anymore.

I’ve gotten to the point now where I know and I communicate my desires and theirs and if they don’t align I wish them the best on their journey and dip
he didn’t say this but when i told him i wanted to make things official after 2 years of what was basically dating he went “you could have anyone you want” and my response was “okay so what about you??”😭 not my proudest moment
