Landlord called today & told me I have to move out because he wants to sell the coop I rent from him. I’m disabled, legally blind, 70 years old. I’m distraught. My son was killed last year & I’m suffering from PTSD & am being treated but I am too sick to move. I’ve lived here 8 years

r/

I’ve always pay my rent 2 weeks in advance & I pay for repairs the landlord is supposed to be responsible for. I work from home to supplement my social security so I just get by. But I’m just over income limit that would make me eligible for any additional benefits. I probably won’t survive this at this point in my life. I have nobody to help me since my 42 year old son was brutally killed last year. I do get grief therapy & medication but it’s not very helpful. I belong to online groups for parents who have lost their adult children. I have several other diseases. My ability to walk is limited due to a stroke 3 years ago as well as pulmonary fibrosis which, at best, my life expectancy is approximately 5 years. My only thought is to just stay here until I’m physically removed & homeless. Hopefully a few months living on streets will be the end. I hardly care anymore since my landlord called this morning. It was shocking & felt like the last straw. Wants me out by October 15th. I can’t cope. I’m lost without my son. He was also my best friend. Thank you for letting me vent. I don’t really think anyone can offer advice. Location: Bergen County, New Jersey, USA

    Do you have a fixed-term lease, or a month-to-month rental agreement ?

Your age, infirmity, family tragedy, and disability all make you very sympathetic. But they don’t compel your landlord to continue housing you indefinitely, especially if they want to sell the property.

    >Wants me out by October 15

90+ days is substantial advance notice.

    >just stay here until I’m physically removed and homeless

You can very probably find housing, especially if you spend the next three months applying, rather than choosing that sort of controlled descent into terrain.

I’m not sure about your city, but in mine, there are several complexs for low income seniors that aren’t section 8 or anything like that. They exist for people like you, who barely thread the line and make a little too much for benefits. Maybe there is housing like that in your town. I know ours has a wait, but it’s usually not terribly long. You should start looking and applying everywhere you can, right now. If you could get on a wait list your landlord may be more prone to an extension, it sounds like you all have a good working relationship. I wish you the best of luck.

I understand that librarians are often informed about social service options in their area, maybe ask someone who works at the library.
