Lars Ulrich does not deserve the hate he gets for being a bad drummer.

r/

I think people tend to over criticise him for everything he plays, whether it is good or bad, because they think he is an easy target to make fun of. A couple famous clips of him struggling with tempo put it in everyone’s minds that he can’t play anything well anymore, when he is still a very good player. Maybe he has faded a bit and lost minor amounts of skill over the years, but everyone would at his age. People forget all of the amazing drum work in previous Metallica albums and the praise he deserves for them, and I don’t care that he made one mistake at a concert a few years ago while playing some random fill, I’m not going to bully him in an entire novel in a YouTube comment section for it.

Was he ever really that great of a drummer or just a key member of the band who also became the leading opponent to music sharing and streaming sites? Ironic really considering in their early performances the band would literally give away albums to the fans for attention…the epitome of music sharing.

I don’t think even he would say he’s this great technical drummer. His strength was having the personality and tenacity to market the band in the beginning and be James’s right hand man with songwriting and arrangement.

And honestly? I find that more impressive then just being a technically skilled drummer who can play really fast or in some weird time signature.

In my experience, people don’t seriously hate on him. He’s just easy to make fun of because of his noisy, sloppy style.

Even at his peak, he was mid. He’s always had like 5 or 6 tricks that he uses for every song.

Lars is a nepo baby. He doesn’t care about keeping up his drumming chops. At his best he did the minimum that was needed for the band. Now he just sounds sloppy. He was never Neil Peart level, Maybe if JK Simmons verbally abused him he might turn around. NOT QUITE MY TEMPO!

People are still talking about Metallica? ROFL!

I moved on from them in the 90s. Open up your fucking mind to other music.

Lars Ulrich’s problem isn’t that he’s old, it’s that all of his drumbeats are basic, and never really add anything to the song. That’s the issue. Man is still living in a pre-Neil Pert era in 2025.

He innovated with double bass in metal, but honestly, that was already being used in other genres, so it was only a matter of time before it made its way over, so I don’t think it’s that impressive. Maybe if he did cool stuff with them, but it’s always been basic, no fuss stuff. Others who came after had to innovate on that idea.

And here we get to the crux of it. I view Lars as an idea man, and he clearly plays a big role in the writing process. So while he’s definitely to credit for Metallica’s success, all of it has been in spite of his drumming skills.

Dudes terrible. He can’t even hold a beat live.

He’s not even the best drummer in Metallica…

Trust me, he don’t care what people might think when their upvote is seen as the didgets on his bankaccount

Ulrich is more hated because he’s a shitty, unlikeable dude, rather than a faultering drummer.
