Latin Americans, are The Simpsons culturally relevant in your country?

r/

I can’t imagine Argentinian meme culture without the Simpson. Quoting the show and referencing it is so ingrained in our ways of communicating that sometimes we don’t even notice we do it. Is it like that anywhere else?

Oh, yeah. I don’t know for the younger generation but for milleniala who grew up with them, they are up there with Firends and DBZ for shows with the biggest cultural footprints of our youths

In Argentina pretty much yes, in every town or city you will find that there was or is a store or even fast food joint with a Simpsons character as their mascot and name of the place, in the cities of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca there is a sandwich joint that is named after the German exchange student and in the city of La Rioja there is a store named after with the Spanish translation of Homer’s doppelganger

Most people would recognize them, sure, but I wouldn’t call it culturally relevant. Other animations, both western and japanese, had a much greater and long-lasting impact on the average brazilian.

Damn, I’d say most young millennials/old zoomers have fonder memories of the Jackie Chan cartoon! Lol

Everybody knows what it is. Culturally relevant, tho? I doubt.

Yes, The Simpsons are popular in Mexico. I don’t know if they’re culturally relevant, but they’re popular. Especially now because of memes and because of the urban legend that they predict stuff.

for middle and upper class millenials, yes. everyone else, no.

  7. kolossal Avatar

No but they’re known by everyone.

  8. chffon Avatar

No, Simpsons are popular but not in the level of cultural relevance. I think for Brazil Woody Woodpecker and El Chavo del 8 is more culturally relevant.

  9. Disastrous_Source977 Avatar

Not particularly. I remember that Globo used to broadcast Simpsons episodes, but that was a while ago. There are other shows that have had more relevance like ‘Everybody hates Chris’, ‘DragonBall’, ‘Saint Seya’, and ‘El Chavo’.

En México si, en Argentina mucho más

I think you’re mistaking extremely popular with culturally relevant

In Argentina I would say a great deal of people I know could recognize many scenes and quotes from seasons 1-10, and you can see Homer Simpson painted on signs in lots of places. There is also, I believe, a clandestine Duff brewery and a Moe’s Tavern in Buenos Aires.

I’m argentinian the Simpsons are like a folk deity here

Very popular in Brazil, but not even close to Argentina level.

On the other side, ‘El chavo’ is more popular here than anywhere else, even Mexico or any other county that loved it, like Argentina.

  18. vtuber_fan11 Avatar

Yes they were very popular. They were popular here longer than in America. Over there they more or less faded by the 2000s. Over here they were popular 10 years more.

Nobody watches them anymore though. The new episodes are complete rubbish.

Ffsmm, I’m not gonna lie to you.

  20. Equal-Suggestion3182 Avatar

They exist. People know them. Culturally relevant? Idk, how would you define that? I’m sure memes would exist if the Simpsons didn’t exit

  21. _kevx_91 Avatar

    Not really.

  22. aliensuperstars_ Avatar

def not like in Argentina, but we like it around here, even if that episode about Brasil pissed off everyone lmao

but i feel like the only reference we all use is the Porco-Aranha song

  23. nishanarmy Avatar

In Colombia, at least people I know, quote them quite often and people recognize where it comes from. So I’d say it’s quite culturally relevant, at least for millennials.

  24. MatiFernandez_2006 Avatar

Not so much in newer generations since its been years without The Simpsons airing in open air TV (and nowadays nobody watch tv and there are much more options, and the show has been shit for 20 years, and…)

  25. I-cant-hug-every-cat Avatar

When The Simpsons was taken out of prime time on a local channel to give more time to a local trash show, the fans held a protest march, (half seriously and half jokingly) so imagine

  26. Valuable_Barber6086 Avatar

That would be the Woodpecker Animations. The Simpsons are popular, but not in the same meme-making rhythm as in Argentina.

Not anymore, that series is down🤣

  29. castlebanks Avatar

Argentina is obsessed with The Simpsons. But not the 40+ and the youngest generations, it’s the middle that knows every episode and line

  30. Tandel21 Avatar

I still remember when in Bolivia they had a full blown protest because they stopped airing the simpsons

  31. Scrooge-McMet Avatar

Its not the 90s anymore bud. Lol

  32. Alternative-Method51 Avatar

you can make simpson jokes and A LOT of people get them, you can even repeat word by word what homer said in some chapters and people get it.

the other day I went to a pub, it had an entire wall with a giant simpsons painting in moe’s bar drinking
