I’m really stressed about this situation and I’m hoping posting here can help me figure out what to do.
My lease was up at the end of June. I have lived in this home for 3 years. I am on a housing assistance program. My youngest was recently diagnosed with a disability and because of his developing needs the home no longer suits our family. I have indicated to the housing program coordinator that we would like to move and they have agreed to initiate the process, however, there is a 60 day delay in processing of the request which means it could be another month or more before we receive the paperwork to start the process. It could take a couple of months past that to actually relocate.
My landlord has been trying to get me to sign another year lease which I am hesitant to do because I know we won’t be able to stay there another full year. I indicated to the landlord that we would prefer to go on a month to month lease at this time. They said they don’t offer that even though the previous lease I signed indicates otherwise. They said I either need to sign the year lease or schedule a move out inspection and turn in the keys and that if I don’t do one or the other that I am then entering into an “overstay” and they will initiate eviction proceedings. They have also sent a “7 days to cure” letter dated July 1st.
I’m unsure of how to proceed at this point as I don’t want to end up without housing. I have emailed the housing program, reached out to an advocate, and applied with Legal Aid of NC and have not heard from anyone as to what I should do next.
I’m considering just signing the year lease and then requesting an early termination with cause when we are able to secure a more suitable home for our family’s needs.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
