What’s your makeup routine if you’re in your mid 30s or near there? What exact foundation, powder, and other products do you use?
I never had good skin growing up as I was always dealing with acne. I was finally able to get rid of acne in my 30s but was left with acne scars. I used to cover the redness with foundation but lately, I notice none of my products look good on my skin.
My skin has lost its elasticity and its plumpness. I have some fine lines and I noticed when I wear makeup now, the foundation just clings everywhere … including my scars, lines, dry patches.
I know it’s not the makeup it self because I have been using products I used in my early 30s and they used to work great. I think with age, my skin has changed and become dull so now makeup doesn’t look great on me.
Any advice or tips? Thanks!

What’s your skincare routine like? You’re right, makeup won’t look the same when the skin it’s sitting on has changed.
Good makeup application starts with good skincare. Find products that work for you and have a routine. Vitamin C serum has worked wonders for my dullness and discoloration. Make sure to moisturize well before putting on makeup and use a hydrating primer to avoid makeup setting into fine lines.
Maybe your makeup hasn’t changed, but perhaps it’s just not suitable for your skin now. The makeup I wore in my early 30s (helloooo full-coverage baddy bakeface!) would definitely not work with my skin now even though those products are still perfectly fine for what they are.
Part of what can make faces look more dull is incomplete removal of makeup at the end of the day. Do you have a thorough makeup removal routine? Does your skincare involve semi-regular exfoliation and daily moisturization? Just things to consider.
32 here- Full routine? It changes with the day, but I have been on these mainly:
I use a spatula these days to apply my foundation. Otherwise, brushes!
I also try to wash my brushes with dawn soap often, wash my face nightly.
And I get monthly facials.
I’d say, start with skincare, get a good routine going, then sample at Sephora or similar to get your holy grails?
I started using a tinted serum instead of foundation for this very reason. It has a much more natural finish on my skin. I usually avoid powder on top since that also just settles into fine lines and pores and makes me look dull/dusty. The L’Oréal True Match Nude serum is my go-to. Coverage is more sheer than a foundation though, so sometimes I also use a concealer for blemishes and under eye area. I find as I get older, less is more when it comes to makeup.
I also use perscription tretinoin for acne which works wonders on the fine lines too. My skincare is pretty minimal otherwise… just micellar water for cleansing, a cream moisturizer (elf holy hydration), and sunscreen when I’m outside.
Just another vote for reevaluating your skincare routine and making sure it is still meeting the needs of your skin at this stage.
Yes, makeup changes too, but the “base” of it all is your skincare.
I am a good bit older, about to turn 44, but what I have learned as I age, is that creamier versions of makeup are better for aging skin that has fine lines and wrinkles.
They are less likely to settle into fine lines and patchy spots and go on a lot smoother.
I also find that using makeup that’s more of a blend of skincare and cosmetics also seems to work a lot better.
Things like Ilia skin tint serum, Il Makiage, It Cosmetics Better than Skin, etc.
Also tinted moisturizers go a long way too.
Like Laura Mercier, and there’s a couple different versions like a lightweight and an illuminating one.
Color correcting balms like Hero, do better than a stick or thicker/heavier correction fluid.
For concealers, I like Tarte Shape Tape still, but have moved away from the original formula and do the creamy version now.
For the eye area, making sure it’s really nicely moisturized is key.
Even if I’ve used a moisturizer in general, I’ll sometimes go back under the eye with a balm like Roc to make sure it’s really well hydrated before I do a concealer there.
I don’t do powders at all anymore.
That’s just asking for settling in lines.
Even the finer ones that promise not to do that lol.
I use setting sprays if I’m doing more makeup.
My daily is really just a tinted moisturizer with SPF, brow, swipe of mascara.
