Margarine is NOT interchangeable for butter

r/

Had breakfast at my friends house this morning and when I asked for butter (for toast) and she brought me margarine I really had to re-assess.

I just don’t understand the purpose of margarine

Half the cost, 7% of the taste.

I mean it is though. You may dislike it but people use it literally for that purpose.

    I can’t believe it’s not butter.

After I moved out of the house. 40 years now. I have NEVER bought margarine, no matter how poor I was.

Margarine doesn’t exist in m America, unless this woman is a chemist doing unnecessary at-home experiments. Margarine contains trans fats, which have been banned by the FDA, so now you can buy butter or vegetable oil spreads of various percentages of vegetable oil and an emulsifier.

lactose intolerant: butter is just toxic margarine for me

Definitely NOT interchangeable. Like changing real maple syrup for pancake sweetener.

This sounds like rich people talk.

Ketchup is NOT interchangeable for Catsup.

Edit: my metaphor is NOT interchangeable with OPs opinion. They are still wrong. Margarine is poor man’s butter it’s the same shit even if my analogy was stupid, and it was.

Honestly I’m gonna get downvoted to hell for this but I prefer olive oil based “butter” which is basically margarine, than butter. It’s salty and has a slight garlic taste to it for some reason and I like that. Butter still has its place though of course and I don’t mind it at all.

Not an unpopular opinion. Margerine tastes like shit (subjective), and is incredibly bad for your health (objective).

Works for me. I don’t know the difference by taste really.

Not for baking but it’s fine for toast and is even superior for grilled cheese if you don’t leave out a butter tray

Some may have diet restrictions, allergies, cost restrictions, or even just a preference to it. I’ve had olive oil margarine and it’s delicious.

I will also tell you that margarine is interchangeable for a lot of things. A lot of your baked goods you get are likely margarine and because of the cost of butter. I’ve worked in The culinary industry for over a decade and I can tell you that butter is too expensive to use in everything and bakers will decide what gets butter, margarine, or a blend of the two to manage a budget. A lot of our baked goods would be far more expensive if we didn’t have margarine.

And there’s nothing wrong with it, there’s a lot of ways where margarine is better for some recipes/diets than others and the same goes for butter. It depends on what you’re trying to achieve.

Fat is fat, regardless of origin. What’s there to not understand?

Not even remotely an unpopular opinion.

it’s cheaper. used by poor people and for baking.

I refuse to use margarine or any other butter-ish spread. It’s just not worth it. It’s not healthier, it doesn’t taste as good, it doesn’t impart the same texture to baked goods. The beliefs that made margarine or “oleoresin” popular in the 70s have been largely disproven. At this point, it only remains popular due to consumer tradition. Forget all that nonsense and just buy real butter unless you have a dairy allergy or other medical condition that prohibits your use of butter.

Even on free food. Beggars can be choosers, I guess.

That’s actually exactly what it is.

  24. Sabre_Killer_Queen Avatar

    Cheaper

    Easier to spread

    Less greasy for some dishes

And, a taste similar to butter, depending on the brand you go for.

I always say “butter” but do typically have both in the house. I PREFER country crock (margarine) just bcuz its what i like 🤷🏻‍♀️ but keep butter for those that want it/baking.
Although i typically ask someone which they want if im offering. And if they dont want margarine butter thats fine. Butter is just too much of a hassle to thaw out most of the time. It takes forever just from being in the fridge so i just use CC on my toast

It doesn’t taste as good as butter. And it doesn’t work as well for cooking and baking; the margarines I’ve tried have more water in them than butter does, which can ruin a dish.

In the winter I use flora buttery cause it doesn’t harden. I don’t want to mess about with having to slightly melt butter to make a packed lunch.
