Marital Property Question

r/

I am helping my sister through a divorce (no papers filed yet) in GA. Both parties have very little in the way of assets and there are no children. I recently found out that the car that my sister is driving is paid off and in his name. The car was purchased when they were engaged. Once they were married my sister sold her car and paid off the car she is now driving with the money from her old car. He also contributed funds to pay off the car. At that time, her soon to be ex bought a car that he could not afford and it was repossessed months later. He then bought another truck which my sister had to co-sign for because of his poor credit. My guess is that they’re upside down on his truck, but she doesn’t know for sure. The soon to be ex is now demanding that she return the car she is driving because it’s in his name and he recently took her off the insurance so that she cannot drive it. We know he is wanting the car back so that he can sell it. Is there any recourse for my sister if we have a paper trail that shows her money going towards the car she has been driving? Google says that a car purchased during marriage is considered marital property in GA regardless of who holds the title, but this vehicle was purchased during their engagement. I am in the process of trying to find her a reasonable attorney, but it’s difficult to justify anyone expensive when the assets are so limited to begin with.
