Me and my motorcycle blasted into a jaywalker at 55mph.

r/

I was driving 55mph on a highway with a whole line of cars about 50 yards behind me. The road was dark and out of nowhere, this dude is stumbling in the middle of the road and I only had a microsecond to swerve without wiping out.

My handlebar caught his arm and Im 100% sure he went down to the ground.

In that instant I made the decision that I wasn’t going to have my life upended just because some yahoo doesn’t know better than to be jaywalking on a dark HIGHWAY.

I gunned it and never looked back. I’d bet good money that the cars behind me ran him over.

Im not happy about it, but I’m glad I didn’t stop. This was WAYYYYY before cell phones and security cameras.

You’re supposed to be in control of your lethal vehicle AT ALL TIMES.
It could have been an animal under your wheel and you would have been the one flying.

    I wish you did.

If the guy is dead it is your fault because you didn’t even call an ambulance when you could have been the first one doing just that.

Last, no people don’t usually wander on the high way.
Never heard of abuse/kidnapping/rape victims who managed to escape in the middle of nowhere?

This person didn’t deserve any of this, jaywalking isn’t a crime. What you did was.

    You’re despicable.

  6. Middle-Can-9045 Avatar

I’ve heard of things like this happening before. If the person was drunk stumbling on the dark highway not in a crosswalk you would not be in any legal trouble. That sort of thing is pretty clearly the pedestrians fault.

Edit: to be clear I’m not a hit and run is legal. You should stop and help.

  7. Disastrous-Essay-253 Avatar

Damn. I knew a guy, past co-worker. A guy was walking on the highway, drunk, the co-worker hit him and killed him. He MANED up and stayed at the scene. He did the RIGHT thing. He did not get in any trouble for it considering it was dark, the guy was drunk, and he was walking on the highway. You are a deplorable, weak man/woman. The dude you hit had a family. What if someone behind you was thinking they hit him first and had to take accountability for your nasty actions and poor judgement. You reap what you sow.

  8. CropCircle77 Avatar

People who can do these split second decisions are most likely to survive in disaster situations.

You did the right thing, I don’t blame you. Nothing even morally wrong about it.

Dude was a goner when he stumbled onto the highway. Would probably have gotten run over even without you making first contact. Rendering aid in this situation would probably have been pointless and potentially dangerous. You going back to face the music after the fact would have benefited exactly no one.

And you too could easily have died that night on that highway.

I live in Los Angeles & at least 2 years ago, My Mom, sister & I are driving on the FREEWAY, & my Mom points out a very large awareness digital sign (previously used for emergencies like Amber Alerts or sudden stops ahead) that reads, “KEEP EYE OUT FOR PEDESTRIANS”

This happened to my brother in law, pedestrian was crossing the road on a red light, early morning, thinking theres no one on the road. Brother in law was on his bike, road is on an incline so he didn’t see him till it was too late. They both died on the spot.

  18. K_SeeYou Avatar

Not sure why this one triggered me so much but what I will say is even if you did stop and report it in today’s world you would be a 100% excused from any intentional actions. Cameras would show that this individual suddenly appeared and you had very little time to react just as cops do in certain situations when someone SUDDENLY pulls a gun or a knife at them mere feet away.

I was riding my motorcycle at dusk through a busy downtown area on my way home from work. I was going 25-30mph max coming up a hill. A car passes in the opposite lane as I’m coming around a curve.

Two teenagers come sprinting across the street from behind a rock wall. I distinctly remember their feet crossing over the yellow lines into my lane- I was in the left hand lane position closest to the line. That was then they realized I was there. I had already made the choice to emergency break in the second I was them- as I expected them to keep running across. but realized it wasn’t going to be enough stopping time. At that point it was too late to swerve.

However they screamed and jumped backward to the other lane of the road as I went past them. I didn’t touch them- didn’t honk- just kinda stared in shock. They were fine and then continued on running to the other side. I decided not to stop and I continue to wonder if I should have.

I was so close to running into them because they ran out from a blind corner when there were literally two separate crosswalks about 10 feet to their right.

I remember being very upset even after I got home. I wasn’t speeding, I was doing all the things I should have done and still could have killed all three of us or at least done some serious damage.

My dad was a fishing guide, one day he was towing his boat back from a trip, with clients in his vehicle with him. They were on a rural part of the highway with a steep drop off on one side, cliff wall on the other. A kid was walking with multiple loose dogs right beside the highway. One of the dogs ran infront of my dad’s vehicle and unfortunately the teenager bolted into the road after it. There was nowhere for my dad to swerve, no way for him to stop in time, especially while towing the boat. The kid survived but was mentally and physically disabled due to the accident. The court sided with my dad but later the family privately tried to sue him. He also got death threats and other harassment from the kids family. It tore my dad up for the rest of his life. He worked at a school every winter when he wasn’t guiding and couldn’t reckon with hurting a kid. Situations like this are terrible on everyone. I don’t blame you at all OP.

I was sitting third in line at a stop sign when a bicyclist, out of nowhere, hit the front passenger side of my car at the tire and flew over the top with his bike. It was like out of a movie. He got up and started yelling about how I hit him and he was going to sue me. Luckily a cop saw the whole thing and caught it on his dash camera. The guy left in cuffs. I was lucky because so many times it is automatically the cars fault.

  49. Silent-Hornet-8606 Avatar

So you weren’t speeding, and presumably not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you would not have been in any trouble for an accident that couldnt be avoided … Yet you still decided to not stop?

Wow. That’s a totally horrible decision and I’m surprised you can live with it so easily.

You know that you did the wrong thing, so the attempt to justify it is pathetic honestly.

In the UK we don’t have jaywalkers, we call them pedestrians. You hit a pedestrian and faked to stop. You belong in prison.

  53. ReindeerKind1993 Avatar

Just saying whether your in the right or wrong not stopping makes it 100x worse for you especially if they catch you e.g by cameras and track you down. No excuse will save you then. The courts will throw the book at you for the mere fact you ran. All drivers are involved in a accident are obligated to stop and check if the car crash victim is ok and render aid if needed. Running makes it look like you have something to hide.

  55. Dream-Ambassador Avatar

my spouse clipped a guy who was walking in the road at night. He couldnt swerve because there was an off duty cop driving towards him in a truck towing a trailer. The guy broke his arm but the off duty cop testified in the police report that there was nowhere for my spouse to swerve and, well, the guy was walking in dark clothes at night in the road (not the shoulder). So the other guy was found at fault.

  56. nuko22 Avatar

lol when your children are old enough to drive they better hope this hypothetical person walks out in the road in the middle of nowhere, because everywhere else will have cameras. A mother just got hit and killed by a motorcyclist (not her fault) in Seattle last week and I’m surprised they haven’t found him yet, but there are definitely photos.

  61. Stunning-Leek334 Avatar

So instead of stopping and helping him when you would not be found at fault you fled the scene and very likely could have had him killed? And you think that was a good decision?

  62. FennelAlternative861 Avatar

  63. Another-throwaway82 Avatar

If youre riding 55mph and had a “milisecond” to react, you were riding too fucking fast. Im personally hoping you end up under a car. Im guessing it won’t be much longer if you still think to this day that you’re in the right.

  64. cloudkeeper Avatar

Your actions were heartless, dumb, and totally unnecessary. If someone is jaywalking ON THE HIGHWAY you almost certainly wouldn’t have gotten into literally any trouble. Seriously. I know because I did something similar and stopped and called the cops. I was cleared immediately because a drunk jaywalker is 100% in the wrong. Fucking duh.

You went from blameless to leaving the scene of an accident. You went from having an minor interaction with the cops to commiting a felony. You made things exponentially worse for yourself, not to mention you didn’t even stop to make sure a fellow human was okay.

Also it’s idiotic to post this on the Internet assuming it’s true. The responses saying you did the right thing are fucking insane.

I didn’t have a dash cam, but there were a couple of ring cams that caught the accident. The truck driver tried to claim I cut him off and slammed on my brakes for no reason. He was drunk and had no clue there was even a kid there.

I’ve had something similar happen before.

I was out driving in a college town around 1 am on a Monday. Just driving down a local road when this dude is just standing there in the road. Luckily I saw him, stopped and gave him a honk. Dude looked at me, raised his arms up with a “what the fuck” gesture, and started to walk toward my driver side door. I swerved into the other lane and gunned it. He threw his entire body onto the driver side of my car and rolled off, lying on the middle of the road. I didn’t even look back.

  69. Gold-Possibility9362 Avatar

Yes. I can understand the panic. But you hit someone nonetheless.
If this person came out of nowhere and you feel like the crash was unavoidable, why not stay and call the police? Tell them what happened.

Now, this incident is eating you up inside. Which speaks to how you’re a good person who merely panicked. This is human nature.

Yet you confess to a group of Discovery ID addicts, what you have done. Like you want to be found out. And if the documentary “Don’t f’ with Cats” hasn’t proven one thing, it’s people find a way .
