Mechanic is dragging his feet with my car

r/

So long story short, my car has been in the shop since May 21st which makes it almost two months. My car needs a new engine due to a flood that happened on a road that I was being very dumb for driving through. The mechanic I took it to I feel has been dragging his feet with doing the work on the car. Every week it’s an excuse of why it’s not been done. First he tells me the engine hasn’t delivered which I get but then he tells me, the engine was delivered which was June 5th. Then he says it will be done on one day then I call on that day and its still not done and he tells me a new day or
weekend every week. Then he gives me an excuse saying that the heat was killing him and his workers. Now it’s that the engine was chipped and they needed to have a new engine delivered. Things are not adding up. I feel like he is holding my car hostage and I don’t know what to do. Can anyone here give me advice? I’m not sure if I have to pursue anything legal or what.

It would seem odd that they would be dragging their feet on fixing it. Swapping engines isn’t cheap and presumably, it is a pretty good payday when it is done and would be in their best interest to get it done sooner than later. If it is a small shop, it may take longer since they have fewer mechanics.
If you’re unhappy, you have the option of calling around to see if there is another shop that can get it done sooner and tow your car there.

Engine swaps are a huge job. When a replacement engine is shipped, it’s not something that fits in a little UPS box. So it could have taken 2 weeks for freight delivery. He discovered that it arrived damaged. So it seems reasonable he needs another few weeks for the replacement to arrive & for work to start.
