I’ll catch hell for it, I know. But my family, my husband everyone loves this idiot and his stupid movies. I just sat through “life stinks” and listened to my husband laugh and laugh. Not one thing is funny. Terrible acting. It’s all so dumb. And this is a comedy genius? Honestly random strangers are funnier. Maybe I’m missing something
Comments
Yes… a sense of humor. Holy shit I would be weirded out by anyone that doesn’t laugh at mel brooks
Terrible opinion take my upvote.
I’m flabbergasted, that is certainly an unpopular opinion. You have my upvote.
this is ludacris. probably the best post ive seen on this sub
I’ll give you that a good % of his material hasn’t aged well, and he’s also always been hit or miss. But when he hits, he tends to really hit.
He also swings wildly between just stupid humor, and using stupid humor to say something actually intelligent, which can get easily lost in translation if you don’t like stupid humor.
Definitely not for everyone, and definitely comes with a disclaimer these days.
You’re definitely missing something. Mel Brooks has been a gift to humanity, his work is epic. Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and Spaceballs… some of the greatest comedies ever made. You get my upvote for this terrible opinion.
Not going to rain hellfire on you, and here’s an upvote for an unpopular opinion. Try History of the World Part 1 and see if your opinion evolves. Also, Young Frankenstein is beautiful and brilliant. Brooks also created and wrote the original Get Smart show and that was pretty friggin funny.
Blasphemy!
Space Balls is one of my favorites comedies, along with Airplane, Naked Gun, and Scary Movie. Sense of humor is always subjective. What someone finds funny, another might not find it funny. We’re all different.
Take my upvote and my middle finger.
You monster.
Truly an unpopular opinion because it is clearly mistaken. Spaceballs alone is a seminal work of Western civilization.
Not just an unpopular opinion, but offensively wrong.
You’re mistaken. Take an upvote.
I get it. Brooks has always bobbed and weaved back and forth from witful satire to juvenile slapstick with reckless abandon. It also never hurt him that great actors with impeccable comedic timing and grace were always on board as well.
But you’re wrong. Mel Brooks is one of the greatest entertainers and filmmakers in hollywood history, and in terms of whether he is funny or not, you’re definitely in a small minority there.
Upvoted.
I knew it. I’m surrounded by Assholes!

I feel like you were looking for something with high production value and highbrow comedy. Apparently you didn’t understand that this was all low brow comedy and basically everything he’s made is a satire of whatever the topic is and of itself.
But not all comedy is for everybody. I feel like you have to be able to laugh at yourself in the world around you to enjoy Mel Brooks, could just be me though.
Finally, an actually unpopular opinion, take my upvote and go to hell
Take my upvote you monster.
If not one thing in Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein makes you laugh, I think you may be clinically dead.
I’m very curious what comedy movies you do like
Take my upvote.
Oh, I see what you did there, your problem here is you didn’t watch The Producers.
Got my upvote. Oof.
Are you young? I’ve talked with a lot of [young] folks who don’t appreciate the irreverent, slapsticky stylings of comedy yore.
How do you feel about the following movies: Up in Smoke, Hot Shots, Naked Gun, Police Academy, and Down Periscope?
If you enjoy any of those, what’s different about them that makes em enjoyable?
[edit: clarification]
Bro. The elephant man. He didn’t even put his name to it.
Your family must have found you in a bin.
Watch space balls and you’ll get it
It’s good to be the king.
Hey, idiots don’t know humor.
Robin Hood Men in Tights is the funniest movie of all time. His other movies are great too, but that one is next level laughs.
I doubt this is an actual held opinion. More likely karma farming.
Is this some ploy to post such an absurdly unpopular opinion that you pocket the money from the horny widows that funded it, and is deleted the next day?
This is like something my pretentious asshole bother would say. But he doesn’t because he’s human. Sorry about your diagnosis.
Life Stinks is such an underrated movie. Still funny to this day and more relevant than ever in this political climate.
For those who haven’t seen it: “A filthy-rich businessman bets a corporate rival that he can live on the streets of L.A. without the comforts of home or money, but it proves to be tougher than he thought.” -imdb
I love the “I’m richer” scene:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AQZLYcPOT1U
Maybe you’re just not into that style of humor?
I love Spaceballs, like parts of Blazing Saddles and find the Gene Hackman scene in Young Frankenstein funny as Hell (the rest of the movie is boring) but otherwise I think he’s crazy overrated. I enjoy tons of spoof movies too but he’s stuff just doesn’t work on me for some reason.
Funny opinion coming from someone is just one of the people of the land. Common clay of the new west. You know…..
Opinions by definition can’t be right or wrong but you’re definitely challenging that
Comedy is subjective.
I personally find nonsensical movies to be hilarious, but to each their own.
I think that movie is hilarious. I mean, pretty much anything back then is funnier than anything put out today. I think Rodney dangerfield was even better
Take my upvote.
And once again, yet again, the internet shows its complete inability to say “Meh, it’s just not for me.” and move the fuck on. No, it must be that it’s objectively bad, and everyone else is just wrong.
Have you ever seen such cruelty?!?
An actual unpopular opinion, I upvoted because of that, but not because I agree with you. I love Mel Brooks!
What comedy movies do you enjoy?
checks notes Nope
A truly unpopular opinion.
Ok, I really want to know what you do find funny.
This is the second time I’ve seen a post mention not liking Mep Brooks today
This makes me happy that Mel Brooks would probably laugh at this post. L take
That post makes me wanna do a Mel Brooks marathon.
Unpopular opinion. Upvote and go fuck yourself.
You’ve got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land—the common clay of the new West. You know… morons.
An Abby Normal opinion
Hall of fame unpopular opinion. Take my upvote.
I’ve heard of mel brooks but… who is she?
I’ll bet OP doesn’t like the stooges, either.
I’m particularly glad that these lovely Redditors are here today to see that post. Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age.
So Spaceballs and Robin hood men in tights did not totally crack you up multiple times to the point where it was hard to breathe? Really? Wait a minute here… I know what’s really going on. The OP is…Mel Brooks himself! I mean it must be!
Well, congratulations. You have definitely fulfilled the requirements for this sub Reddit even if you are wrong.
Best/worst unpopular opinion of all time.
Blazing Saddles
Young Frankenstein
Spaceballs
Stfu
OH look! a stand-up philosopher!
Wowwwww…………..
Just, how can you not bust a gut? Life Stinks is arguably his worst movie. But he’s always been hilarious.
You had to grow up on it, i think. So its a part of your childhood you can enjoy again and again.
I personally really like Mel Brooks movies, but I can understand that they wont click for some people.
His humor is a period of the times, they are like ultimate dad jokes and one liners. I dont really know how to describe it, wise ass new yorker humor.
Don’t you talk about an absolute national treasure like that! Take your upvote and get out, lol. He doesnt need your negativity at 99 years old!
They say the peasants are revolting.
You said it, they stink on ice
Like this take
Holy Grail probably doesn’t do much for you either?
Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, High Anxiety, the over looked Silent Movie. Go back even further to Your Show of Shows and the 2000 year old man, with Carl Reiner. Mel Brooks is a legend and national treasure.
Horrendous opinion. You should be ashamed of yourself. Absolutely deserves an upvote.
Fuck you, up voted
You’re clearly not high or drunk enough to appreciate fine art.
I’ve seen 5 of his movies.
4 I was like you: “what’s the big deal?”, but I did quite enjoy “Young Frankenstein”, now that was some fun stuff 🙂
What you’re missing is what the rest of humanity calls ‘a sense of humor’.
>Maybe I’m missing something
You don’t say
I feel like the key to enjoying (a lot of) Brooks’ films is to see it for the first time when you’re 10-13. That way the silly childish jokes land, then you can coast on nostalgia when re-watching.
If you’re not in the right mood for it the dumb jokes can feel, well, dumb, to the extent that you don’t enjoy the cleverer jokes.
And I say this as someone who has a lot of time for Mel Brooks and his contributions to comedy. Hearing him speak about why he felt certain historical figures were appropriate comedy fodder in the producers is an interesting perspective, especially given how recent the war was at the time.
Comedy at it best is often of its time and place. If it is not for you it’s not funny.
A truly unpopular opinion and fighting words to boot
Its official! Opinions can be wrong. Take my upvote
The irony is that Mel Brooks would probably find this post hilarious.
History of the World part 2 was complete and utter ass
Life Stinks may be his worst ever output, I’ll give you that. But everything else is god tier.
I’m just sorry you’re missing out on so much joy!!
To be fair Life Stinks isn’t really considered among his better films. Young Frankenstein, History of the World Part I, Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs are usually regarded most highly.
This is the best unpopular opinion I’ve seen in a while. Awful opinion. Upvote.
Not everyone has a sense of humour. No need to wonder, it’s a you problem. “Life Stinks” isn’t the best example of Brooks work, however.
I would suggest that you are failing to consider the social circumstances from which the movies were made. There are people who do not see the glorious aspects of movies like Citizen Kane, or the thrilling aspects of Psycho, because of the improvements of special effects and essentially other movies copying them for decades. They have become easy to figure out, or passe, but at the time they were released they were cutting edge and were pushing the limits of cinema. Mel Brooks was willing to push boundaries and tackle issues that others were too scared to do. When these movies came out there was controversy to the point of outrage by some. He was taking shots at social norms and poking fun at influential people, things that movies today do not have the guts to do. Some people don’t see the humour because people like Brooks blazed trails and society has evolved so much because of it, that we don’t even see the genius anymore. This can be said of many trailblazers like Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, All in the Family, MASH, Maude, etc.
What constitutes as good comedy to you?
Always felt the same way. Basically the prop comic of comedy movies.
I have met him and he is lovely and charming and funny and even offered to take a selfie with me
My 10yr old would disagree wholeheartedly.
Take my upvote
Now this is an unpopular opinion done well…I’m upvoting this
You’re objectively wrong. Idk how but you are
I would say that Mel Brooks has made three films that are among the greatest comedies ever.
“Young Frankenstein”, “Blazing Saddles” and “High Anxiety”, all of which are parodies and very well-done. I could re-watch those three multiple times.
“History of the World” is good, as well.
Beyond that, there’s a big drop off to the watchable (“The Producers”, which is a bit over-rated in my opinion, and “Spaceballs” which is very over-rated) and then a huge drop to things like “Life Stinks” and “Dracula: Dead and Loving It” (both of which are abysmal).
But then, comedy is so incredibly subjective. Both Adam Sandler and the Three Stooges have never made me laugh once.
Now I get it! 💡 THIS is how you karma farm!
This is how i feel about Jim Carrey; just making dumb faces and fart jokes doesn’t cut it for me
Take my upvote, the stooges suck too
I get it, but for different reasons. I wouldn’t say nothing is funny about it, or that the setup’s like the “terrible acting, and dumb rhetoric” is only over acting that actually makes the jokes seem forced, but I would say out-dated, or at least over rated. Outdated not because of the jokes made, but the slow pacing of older movies dialogue itself.
Like when you compare it to something like Arrested Development, and after YEARS and multiple rewatches, only to have some stranger on the internet point out, that GOB rides his Segway every time there is another SEGWAY into another PLOT, or just the speed and constant dialogue, it’s like apples to oranges.
His movies are funny, but not knee slapping, 10/10 timeless funny I would be dragging family members in to see it.
It does have that social barrier though also, where people will defend it, without even seeing it. I remember kids saying they loved it, but never seen it. Like “The Godfather”, guys will give it so much praise, but because of the age, it feels like a 7/10 or 6/10 movie.
I think it’s a ‘male’ thing, mostly. I’ve noticed most women also hate Austin Powers and The 3 Stooges and so on. Nod gonna defend it but I do understand it, kinda like over-the-top psychotic and outrageous yet still well-meaning and warmly intended at the heart of it all. So it’s not necessarily as bad nor even as stupid as it appears. Mel Brooks actually does some very socially relevant & scathing satire underneath the idiocy, if you really pay attention. But like I said, I don’t blame you for hating it & a lot of it really seems almost drunken subconscious in origin!
I had to work a banquet held in his honor once and he was pretty rude to staff
Is Robin Hood: Men In Tights a Mel Brooks movie? If so, you’re wrong and dumb.
Is Robin Hood: Men In Tights a Mel Brooks movie? If so, you’re wrong and dumb.
His humor always comes off as corny to me
This opinion makes me question everything about you, yet at the same time, I have no desire to spend any further time on you. May you live a long and prosperous life filled with love, family and friends. Sadly, you will clearly be lacking any comedy. Take my upvote.
Me looking for a reason to agree with OP:
My grandfather literally got kicked out of the movie theater when he saw Blazing Saddles… Why? Because he was laughing so hard it bothered everybody else watching the movie. And that is STILL funny af.
I completely agree
I’m very much with OP on this one.
You’ll get it when you’re older.
Well while we’re at it, what the heck is Blazing Saddles supposed to be because it sure as fuck isn’t funny.
Your opinion suckered so much, no upvote!
(Silently gives upvote)
Watch Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs. If you don’t think those are funny, you have no soul and are dead inside. Take my upvote for the wrong opinion 👍👍
This is the most incredibly wrong unpopular opinion I have ever seen, hail our new queen of wrong
Upvote because he is one of the best comedic actor/directors in entertainment history
Multiple all-time classics, many great films, and very few duds.
So what exactly do you find funny? What’s your type of humor?
History of the World Part 1 is perfect.
Sounds like you’re just not funny
OP only pawn in game of life.
You’re opinion isn’t simply unpopular, it’s wrong. Your husband and his family are better people than you.
Space Balls was better than half the “serious” space opera movies out there.
Alright you win
It helps if you have a sense of humor.
You can be, and ARE wrong. 🤣
I’ll grant you his later movies aren’t that funny, but he was on quite a run with blazing saddles, young Frankenstein, high anxiety, history of the world, part one. Spaceballs was good. Men in tights was good. Just think he’s not your cup of tea. There are plenty of comic actors whose movies I just don’t care for either
I always look at Mr Coffee before I look at Mr Radar
The worst opinion ever. Take the upvote.
You are missing something, a sense of humour apparently
Unpopular opinion for sure, upvote given. However I assume that you are in fact not a funny person yourself
Is the thing you’re missing a sense of humor?
Upvoted for a truly unpopular opinion.
Stupid. But unpopular.
It’s very silly, often absurd humor, and that type of stuff is seriously hit or miss for folks.
For what it’s worth, I also don’t find his work funny, but I do find it very charming, so I like it anyhow. You’re not totally alone.
I don’t get it either, nothing special at all. Just a grumpy old man
Awful opinion. Also, Life Stinks is an awful movie
I feel his movies run out of puff about two thirds the way in and go into limp mode to get to the end
This opinion is so wrong and unpopular I became less popular even in my own personal life by reading it
>It’s all so dumb
That’s the point
Upvoted for horrible opinion. You must be new to the world of comedy.
Difference in sense of humor, it’s not that weird. I have several friends that wouldn’t laugh at Mel Brooks but we can laugh at other things together
Humour is subjective. Your opinion is valid. But it is only an opinion.
Your mother smells of elderberry! – You monster!!!
