I see a ton of posts and comments on the internet about how men never get compliments and how starved we are for attention. I’m not sure I agree.
A couple of years ago, I stopped caring so much about how I looked, and the compliments disappeared. It felt like I became invisible overnight. But before that, I did get noticed. And recently, I decided to turn things around. I started spending many hours a week at the gym, upgraded my style, and went back to a better haircut. Suddenly, the compliments came back fast. Guys joke that I should be the next James Bond, and women often come up to me at bars to tell me I look good.
So here’s the thing: maybe it’s not that men never get compliments. Maybe the guys who complain the loudest just don’t take care of themselves and still expect praise.
Maybe the average man doesn’t get complimented as often as women, sure. But I think the narrative that no man ever gets compliments might have more to do with effort than with society being cruel.
