I’ll come across on a YouTube video somewhere and watch it, but There’s no such thing as going on YouTube and watching something from a channel I follow
Mostly videos about technical stuff, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and such.
Then also some dashcam channels, some music videos and a few influencer.
Video’s about what ever current video game i’m playing. Cooking videos. Sports recaps (NFL, NHL, F1). streaming recommendation videos (Flick Connection). Movie recap videos of movies i wasn’t going to watch to see if it might be something i’m interested in. Food travel show videos to get ideas of where I might want to eat if I go to those cities. Go through phases of true crime videos.
Travel videos.. how to .. stock tips.. guitar lessons.. science fiction shorts..I find new music.. political news.. humorous stand up.. historical videos.
I use it a lot
Nothing much. I have a big TV with Netflix, Disney and sports packages. And an iPad that can play apple TV over the HDMI cable or streaming. If anything, it is usually product reviews when I am trying to make up my mind on something.
Gaming videos, lore videos for said games, stuff like Fascinating Horror or Scary Interesting. Then I might click on something i didn’t mean to and completely wreck my algorithm for a week
Reaction videos of games or movies/ series I really enjoyed, I will never have the opportunity to watch it again for the first time, so I watch others and enjoy their experience.
Play through off games I’m interested in, but will never have the opportunity to play myself, like the first three Uncharted games, because I don’t have a console.
Youtube mostly tries to feed me content that fits the Russia propaganda narrative or that Jordan-Peterson-incel-guru like stuff. It’s difficult to find there stuff that is not trying to brainwash me into being a worst and misinformed person.
I mostly end up searching info about investments; coffee or philosophy. It does require me to be too active to my taste on how much it it takes to avoid being brainwashed. It is horrible
My dad (50s) watches WWE, chinese street food, hunting, fishing, super poor people in some third world country’s cooking videos. He also likes listening to old music with hot babes in the background of the video.
Skyrim-related videos, Cecilia Blomdahl, Reynolds Family, old army rations Steve1989MREinfo, StezStix Fix electrical repairs, Words Unravelled, Sam and Monica, Rest is History, Uyen Ninh, EPL, cooking videos.
PC Building channels, like GamersNexus and De8auer. I watch a lot of history too like The Cold War and World War II in real time (Now Korean War). I tend to avoid the political stuff as I already know what I think of the shit going on now.
No choice but to watch NBA highlights on YouTube unfortunately. The porn adds are an embarrassment when I’m watching with my young son. I wish there was another way.
Video Game retrospective, Sci-fi/horror lore videos, history / battle explanation videos, and some esports (Dota / starcraft, some MTG). I also less frequently watch arts video.
Critical Role and Dimension 20, old episodes of Bob Ross, appliance repair tutorials, history lessons to fall asleep to, Warhammer painting tutorials, and speedruns of old video games.
Sometimes I’ll also use it to find how-to stuff for my job.
DIY stuff whenever something breaks around the house and things to help me fall asleep at night such as a documentary or recently….”Friday the 13th The Series”. Who remembers …
Clips of shows I’m interested in but don’t want to watch or listen to the whole thing, instructional videos, comedy, music, history, science, random things that catch my attention.
50s – I watch a lot of YouTube: space and aviation stuff (launches, Scott Manley, Mike Patey, Ward Carroll, Blancolirio, Fighradar24 etc), long form interview podcasts (Diary of a CEO, Chris Williamson, Tim Ferriss, Lex Friedman, Peter Attia etc), a little bit of political stuff (Hoover Institution, The New Statesman, guitar tutorials, rock climbing and mountaineering stuff, cycling, rugby league and rugby union highlights, MLB….Paul Rober and Smarter Everyday of course.
No channels related to my profession or area of primary expertise.
Building science shows like the build show and stuff, cooking shows, live music, and how to rebuild land cruisers. Basically how to do anything to avoid paying for labor.
Anything documentary-ish, podcasts, different product reviews. Shorts for B-room breaks – I’ll flip through funny youtube shorts that occasionally slip in Sabrina Carpenter bending over and showing everyone her ovaries… I swear I’ve seen her crotch more than her face.
Longer format educational stuff. Folding ideas, Technology Connections, FilmJoy, CGP Grey (if he ever uploads), Tom Scott (though he is currently retired).
I’ll occasionally watch a few Chris Boden shorts for a giggle.
I usually don’t. When I do it’s because I need to figure out how to fix the washer or something. The fact YouTube is taking over in popularity over tv, etc blows my mind.
39 here: Its an eclectic mix of video games, outdoor boys (and other survival/bushcraft videos), Primitive survival, Anime recap channels (they are a great listen while you do other things), Sports highlights, and Creatives (film/design/photography-its what i do irl)
learning a new skill (badminton, vball. real estate, money making, building relationships), old video games gameplay for nostalgia, product review, sports.
Quantum physics, history of math/science, history of ancient civilizations, space/time/gravity stuff, iracing/elden ring/Hearts of Iron 4, Ukraine, our messed up politics, latest on light weight VR (Bigscreen Beyond 2 and Meganex superlight), more broadly – natural and social sciences, music theory, music hacks, music like Hunter and Joe Bonamassa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8iqG12KUto&list=RDx8iqG12KUto&start_radio=1
“Walking videos” of anywhere in the world. It’s great to watch before you travel somewhere. Popular places (Waikiki, New York, Taipei, Paris, etc) usually have fresh videos less than a week old. I like the walking videos with no music or commentary.
53 here. I have a big TV, but no subscriptions to cable TV, Netflix, Disney or any streaming service.
I use Stremio to watch the latest TV shows etc, but I am getting the sense recently that we’re already in the age of AI slop. So I spend most of my viewing – an hour or two a night – watching YouTube on an Android box hooked up to the TV. I pay for the ad free subscription.
I watch video game reviews (I own a ps5 I rarely play).
Digital Foundry tech reviews (I don’t own a PC, or high refresh rate monitor, or any of that jazz). I still watch every video.
Film Theory stuff.
True Crime docs if they’re not too sensationalist.
I subscribe to a few documentarians, commentators. F.D. Signifier, Foldinging Ideas etc.
And I love going down rabbit holes of hobbyists sharing their goofy obsessions:
LOTR lore channels.
Tech Moan – a dude about my age who reviews old (mostly hi-fi) tech.
A girl called Emma who goes on cruises (which looks like an horrendous holiday idea to me, but she is so darn enthusiastic is hard not to enjoy the content).
Bad Movie Bible (check him out).
PBS space time – I adore this channel, but understand very little of it.
Tiny house builds/tours, wood working, gardening, and other DIY videos, SNL Weekend Update, Pod Save America, Diary of a CEO, Trash Theory, Lo-Fi Girl, Book Club Radio, The Daily Show & The Weekly Show, and lots of random crap.
Religiously: Smosh universe stuff, Mythical Morning, Mythical Kitchen, Try Guys, most things Hermitcraft. Because I’m a vet, some .mil folks like Preston Stewert, Ward Carol, Habitual Line Crosser, Mandatory Fun Day and a few others. Because I like to be informed, NBC, CNN, BBC, Belle of the Ranch. Youtube has replaced broadcast TV in my life 100%
Documentary type content (history, technology and science primarily)
And yeah, I watch some meme content too. Sometimes I like to keep up with the youngin’s
I also used to watch some gaming content.
The main thing that I don’t watch is reaction content. I mean, I watch it sometimes when it’s hard to find the original video they are reacting to, but I definitely don’t watch it for the reactions.
I also hate these videos with people talking while doing makeup or anything like that. It’s so weird, and I don’t get it.
Videos on survival skills. Making and setting snares. Cooking outdoors. Cultivating crops and farming. Crabbing. Fishing. Concerts from bands I loved from when I was younger. “Where are they now” of musicians and such.
Basically all of the things that remind me of my younger self. It makes me happy.
Oh, and I watch DESTINOS. It’s 52 videos designed to teach Spanish. You start off easy; English and Spanish. Gradually it gets more in-depth but you start to understand. It’s really helped me to learn and it’s entertaining.
Lately, guides on different weapons for mh wilds. Usually, something about woodworking or gardening or concrete work or electrical or programming. The latest one i needed was setting up the trim on a 3 position toggle for an rc. I fried a servo. Mistakes were made but in the end, it works!
I’m 41 years old and I still watch the attic player and the hard corner.. . Otherwise Trash, Kombo, Fouloscopie and a little SFAR (but it’s professional).
Depends on my current hobby. Right now my wife and I are trying to ‘elevate’ our cooking skills as a together hobby. Other times it’s about photo editing or electronics.
Also music videos from the 80s. (I’m 51). My wife and I will watch travel vlogs sometimes.
Auto repair, Sarah n Tuned, Boosted Boiz, music, Rick Beato, Sina Drummer, Professor of Rock, Steve Lehto, fire arms, landscape, tools, gaming, cooking
ASMR at night for sleeping. Otherwise, it is random. Sometimes an old movie clip pops into my head or sometimes parts of a game I am stuck on (looking at you Jedi: Survivor), or music videos, fix-it videos, how-to videos, etc…
The only channel I follow is for ASMR stuff. The rest of it I can’t stand. Mostly the popular ones with the dramatic thumbnails or the “you won’t believe what I founddidsaw” description They always have ads, they almost always have like a in vid sponsor shoutout, and that “Be sure to click like and subscribe!” That trash grinds on my ears.
I watch many different things like self improvement videos, workout videos, travel vlogs, Moto vlogs, tech and PCMR stuff, webdesign, MMA, vaping, lots of music, standup comedians, watches and knives, more music and some gaming content, product reviews, documentaries, and people who expose scammers 😆
I like to watch wood turning videos from a few favorite carpenters, some live play of TTRPGs that I like, music videos, and occasionally I will watch some videos with my daughter of hamsters making an “escape” from something.

My dad is 60 and I always catch him watching cat and dog compilations lol
He would also put one or two of our cats on his lap and make them “watch with him”
I’m a big fan of history. I’ll watch hours of a channel called, The Rest is History. Or any history channel for that matter. I’ll also watch DIY stuff, or tool restoration channels.
54 here. I am an avid skier, mountain biker and a BJJ brown belt so I mostly watch ski, mountain bike and BJJ videos. I also use it for workout videos and spin classes that I do at home. Other things are cooking, DIY stuff and also I do like to find new music on there (but it used to be way better for that, now it kind of sucks).
