A pick and hook set, originally I bought it on a whim, but I use them daily for cleaning, maintenance and fine work.

  3. Rude_Capital_3185 Avatar

Sort of depends on where you live, I live in a rural area and a headlamp/gloves were both super helpful

  4. dicksledgehammer Avatar

Garlic press. Can’t believe all the money I spent on prepackaged minced garlic

  5. CappaccinoJay Avatar

A high quality pair of nail clippers.

a large steel safety pin. seriously, from working as clip on keyring to opening boxes with the point, best $5 i’ve ever spent, on my 2nd one in 35 years….

  7. jdubius Avatar

Got a really nice trailer tongue lock recently on sale for less than 20 bucks. It’s super satisfying being on the water, knowing nobody can steal my trailer, lol.

Chums neoprene strap for sunglasses. Sure, it screams 80’s, but the utility and value are tremendous.

10x handheld magnifying glass. Around $12 or so on Amazon. With my eyes getting worse after 50, it helps me see all the tiny, tiny print so many companies love to use on instructions.

  10. jwhyem Avatar

Lacrosse balls for massaging knots out of my back and shoulders.

A pack of smokes can go a long way on a Friday / Saturday night.

Good quality spices. Roasted paprika, turmeric or cumin powder makes most veggies or meats dish taste even better.

I like to sit outside so I got a USB/battery operated fan. it’s actually amazing

Key chain Swiss army knife : at least they used to be just under $20 bucks.

  16. ThrowRA-4545 Avatar

    Bidet. Just say bidet.

  17. Canyoufly88 Avatar

This will sound stupid, but a tactical key holder. It clips on to w.e your keys do, and you clip your keys to them, then wrap the keys in this sleek tactical canvas stuff. It silences the key sway and jingle. I can sneak up on my wife and kids in the store, then release the keys so the dogs hear me come in and don’t bark.

  18. sniffing_dog Avatar

Those potato chippers. Only a fiver and work great.

  19. Apocopator Avatar

Good nail clippers. About six bucks, heavier than the cheapos. Worth it every time I use ’em.

  20. Surrealdsx Avatar

I have made a list of everything so far that you guys have said I want to go out and buy almost everything said so far. As for me I kinda been enjoying this phone case that also is a pretty secure wallet.

  21. Fickle_Second_5612 Avatar

The screwdriver sets at Walmart. Like 10-15 bucks? Less than $20 for sure, but versatile and useful when you need to be a lil handy

  22. Some_Belgian_Guy Avatar

A measles, mumps and rubella vaccination.

A hand job. I got one for $15 one time on the beach in New Jersey at Sandy Hook. Was very worth the $15 to have a girl do that for me in the dunes.

Small pocket knife. My EDC is a Buck 379 solo

I know this is just gonna sound like an advertisement but if you eat a lot of fresh strawberries this huller is absolutely magical: https://www.chefn.com/products/stemgem-strawberry-huller?srsltid=AfmBOopOZ6lsFUoarpQUFZlNybbfjhQxbu1LQVS4ZL-oZ49rEi_6p4WN

Looks like they’re sold out on the main site but amazon has them in stock.

Cheap tools. They work fine for most household functions and sometimes for other situations if not used in the extreme.

Cell phone case wallet. I use to forget my wallet at home all the time being in a rush and all but I’ve never forgotten my phone.

    Costco cheesecake

I started using a milk frother when making hot cocoa or chocolate milk using powder and it’s massively cut down on the amount of leftover clumps of unmixed powder.

    Apps on my phone.

For years, I’d get free versions of apps. Apps would have ads or not all of the features.

PowerAmp to play music on my android is a ton better than the native music player. Little blackjack trainer. Golf range finder with the exact golf course I was playing loaded. A few games. Travel organization apps.

I started spending like $15 or $20 a year. I’ve no idea why just a few quarters stopped me from spending money on better experiences with apps I use all of the time.

Why does this question come up all the time? At least once a month I see a “What item under $____ was a game changer?”

Is it just writers for lifestyle websites looking for article ideas? Why this specific question so often?

  36. insurancelawyerbot Avatar

    2 things:

1.) Quality Swing-A-Way can opener. & 2.) Zyliss pizza cutter, pizza wheel style.

These 2 items in your kitchen drawer will last years and you will take with you whenever you move. Don’t lend them out. You’ll never get them back.

edit to add these may be a little more than $20, but are well worth the extra couple of dollars

  37. New-Number-7810 Avatar

A Costco pizza. A whole pizza is like $10 or so, and it makes for several delicious meals. Of course, if that’s too expensive, their hot dog is only $1.50 and has been since the 80s.

A six-piece (electric) egg cooker. I was like, I can cook a few eggs in a pot, what’s the big deal? Well, you pour a given amount of water in (for soft or hard cooked), turn it on, and that’s it. Forget it, walk away, continue making breakfast, coffee, whatever. Beeps when done. Cooks consistently, EVERY time.

A little rechargeable flashlight that I keep in a cup holder in my truck. I’ve used it far more than I thought I would.

A Tushy brand portable pocket bidet. Basically a little squeeze bottle with a spray head.

    I don’t use it regularly, maybe 5-6 times a year, but it’s a godsend when it’s needed.

  41. Ok_Escape103 Avatar

Swiss Army knife flashlight. Got me out of 1000000 situations

  42. Hungry_Wheel_1774 Avatar

More than 20 years ago, I bought an Iriver mp3 player for like 20 bucks (remnant sale).
It has a really good sound!
Two decades after, I still use it like 6 hours a week on average. I use it when I run, before going to sleep, I have used it so much in public transport and some much memories listening to music when I travel abroad.

For this enjoyment/price, the best purchase of my life !

  43. JJQuantum Avatar

Honestly 2 things. A rasp for my heals is wonderful. It keeps them from cracking and the associated pain. Also, a good set of nail clippers. I used to just buy the ones at the drug store and not only are they not that sharp to begin with but they get dull very quickly. It’d be all I could do to clips by big toe. I found some with great reviews on Amazon and they cut through like butter, and haven’t noticeably dulled in about 5 years.

Rechargeable headlight. Having light and also your hands-free is great for hobbies. I use a set of engineering glasses and my headlights sometimes when doing soldering tasks. Makes the job so much easier when you can actually see what you’re working on.

£19 rice cooker. It cooks the perfect rice unsupervised. It can also cook a ton of other things, like soups and stews etc and I even cook my steaks in it now.

It’s tied with my airfryer for my favourite kitchen gadget.

  46. Cananbaum Avatar

I’m a home cook, there’s quite a few things I’ve gotten for $20 or less.

This ball whisk works great when whisking eggs or thin sauces and batters. I use it for pancake batter and it works great for knocking out clumps of dry mix.

Scrambled eggs come out perfectly uniform

    I love mine

  47. lucksh0t Avatar

A pocket knife never know u need to cut something until u do

  48. mikess314 Avatar

I bought a restaurant tray on Amazon for like six bucks and keep it in the car for when I need to eat on the go

    2nd hand fleshlight ….

  50. Flighthome Avatar

Seatbelt cutters and a windshield glass breaker. I keep both in my glove box. When you need them, they’re invaluable.

  51. brownchr014 Avatar

10ft charging cable for my phone as I can charge it while using it in bed.

  52. AskDerpyCat Avatar

Mug warming hot plate for my wfh desk. Pressure sensor, just set the coffee on it and it stays warm all day

Though I got mine like 3-4 years ago. Wouldn’t be surprised if inflation bumped that over 20 now

Another option: if you have dry skin problems, Trader Joe’s coconut butter has been a lifesaver. I have the worst dry skin that will crack and bleed on a daily basis if I don’t treat it. But just putting some on my knuckles/kneecaps/elbows every night before bed and right after showering, I haven’t bled once in the almost 4 years of this routine. Think it was like 14 for a container that will last about a month of heavy use, or a couple months of lighter use.

Also, those cheap square mousepads (5-10 apiece) that are kinda crappy make for good coasters. Fun image, and wider than a tiny disc — harder to accidentally knock over or spill drinks.

It’s not under 20 but every fall, Costco has a sale on electric throw blankets for like 25-35. Need to replace it every couple years, but I use that thing religiously on a daily basis. It’s on my lap constantly when I’m at my desk, even when it’s not turned on. Worth every penny.

Earplugs on a keychain. Always with me. They come in handy at work, when I’m cutting the grass, driving with the windows down, traveling on a plane…
