I’ve never smoked. Never really felt the urge to. But around 80% of my friends do, especially the ones I’m closest to.
I used to wonder why, especially for those who started young and are still doing it well into adulthood. But one friend — probably the one I’m closest to — said something that really stuck with me:
“It’s the only two minutes in my day where I can have a conversation with myself.”
That hit different.
I still don’t smoke. But I get it now.
No. I don’t remember when or why I stopped, but I just one day stopped.
Started as a teenager when we started to drink alcohol. Some of my friends bring cigarettes and we thought as 15 year olds that smoking is a cool thing, first we only smoked at partys until it started to became a daily habit, i‘m 32 and still smoke because it’s addicting and it helps me with stress
No one pressured me.
It was there. I could have easily said no.
Of course, there might be a little mimicry here and there.
What can stay? Drugs are good.
Lots of espressos with a pack of cigarettes on a terrace in a lively city, that’s my kind of thing.
Tried a cigarette once out of curiosity and thought it was horrible, pipe tobacco is delicious though.
I started vaping back then though, and it’s just hard to quit.
In my country military service was mandatory for men.
So one day we are digging a trench. It’s 35C / 95F, no shade, everybody is exhausted. Drill sarge says “All smokers – 15min break. The rest keep digging!”. Naturally, all of us started smoking lol
Wasn’t pressured but all my friends did. I have quit a few times but keep picking it up again ugh
