Had family in town and they left some Corona’s at our home so I thought it would be fun to have a few while jamming to some tunes mid-day. Had dinner after, drank plenty of water and 6 am next morning have a classic hangover. Slight headache, nausea, regret. (In my 20s I could drink 6 beers in 1 night without a hangover.) I went downstairs and poured the last 4 beers down the drain. I don’t see the point. Can anyone relate?

Lite means less calories not less alcohol.
Right there with you.
I used to drink heavily in my twenties, but now I only drink once a week or so if the occasion strikes – since I entered my thirties, if I’m not careful with how much sleep and water I get, three beers will put me on my ass.
Three whole beers. I’ve dabbled with the idea that I’ve got an intolerance to wheat or something, because my girlfriend, who’s a few years older than me, can handle twice what I can with no ill effects at all.
I drank a few pints of ale and a bottle of red wine last night. Today has been rough.
100%
Stopped enjoying it altogether and currently haven’t had a drink in over a year, and while I miss those days, I have zero desire to drink now because I know I just don’t enjoy it anymore
Lol Yeah sounds about right. My tolerance is in the toilet compared to 10-15 years ago.
Not really. I don’t know if my ability to process alcohol has actually reduced or if I’m just more sensitive to it as a father of multiple small children with a more serious job and a watch that literally shows me the effect of alcohol on my body in real time
Either way, I have a few drinks a week. I’ll probably have a couple of beers tonight. I enjoy taking the edge off with a small amount of alcohol and balance that against my other commitments and wishes
I get the impression, at least from Reddit, that in the States the attitude is more binary and you’re either an alcoholic or a teetotaler (slight exaggeration)
if you’re not used to having alcohol, then your tolerance is less. Therefore, it takes less to get you drunk.
Yeah, but did you not eat before drinking ? You may just not be into cheap alcohol no more man. Upgrade to some classy stuff aged at least 8 years minimum like Bourbon or Scotch or Rum. I don’t waste my time w/ beer no more I don’t like the sloshy feeling. Appleton Estate has an 8 year reserve that I personally recommend you keep a stash of to bring w/ you to sip at friends events w/coke or at home.
Welcome!
It happens. Welcome to Earf.
Totally get it. Nearly 12 pack a day for many years. Now if I have 3 maybe 4 light beers any more I’m wrecked for 3 or 4 days.
Yeah I’m 38 and have pretty stopped drinking. Started feeling hungover while drinking, just not worth it. Will occasionally have a couple beers and get reminded that it no longer works for me.
Yep, hardly drink at all anymore because even a couple of drinks leaves me feeling compromised the next day. Just having one, while it won’t give me a hangover, makes it a bit harder for me to get up the next day and will give me a touch of hangxiety.
Def become more sensitive to alcohol side effects as I got older. Quit completely last year. Just got nothing out of it anymore. Fucked will h my sleep every time. Just 2 drinks and the next day sucked.
It’s just not worth it to drink imo, poison.
Jupp. No point drinking a beer. I get hungover no matter what. So might as well get shit faced if I am drinking. Was like someone flipped a switch at 25 and afterwards I can’t do booze without getting wrecked the next day regardless of the amount I drink. Before 25 I could drink all the booze in the world, sleep three hours and wake up feeling like a billion bucks. Now I have half a glass of wine and feel like I am walking death the next day.
Drinking less frequently will mean that your hangovers are worse and occur after a smaller amount of alcohol ingested
I used to be able to drink heavily in college three four days in a row. If there were parties etc. I must have developed some kind of intolerance or wheat allergy with beer. If I have like over two beers I get a complete hangover; however for some reason I can drink like twenty Crown Royal shots with barely any hangover, really just being tired the next day.
I noticed a couple beers gets me really buzzed/drunk but it takes like 5 shots to get a little buzz.
It sounds like I’m a huge drinker but I am not. I only drink usually at big events now or once a month during a board game night.
Yup. Got bad after I became a parent.
If I have one beer anytime after 7pm it completely messes with my sleep. Random wake ups, grogginess, sucks.
If I have 3, I’m assured a hangover.
For me, there is a minimum number of drinks I need to drink to drink to get any of the fun effects of drinking. Not talking “drunk” but just feeling a light buzz, loose, happy, and relaxed.
There is also a minimum number of drinks I can consume before I feel like shit the next day.
I can’t pinpoint exactly when it was… but sometime between 33 and 35 years old, the minimum number of drinks to feel like shit plummeted and is now lower than the minimum number needed to get a pleasant buzz.
To make matters much, much worse… I now have a kid. So there is no sleeping off a hangover. I’m up by 7am every day and expected to be conscious enough to keep a tiny human being, with 0 sense of self-preservation alive.
Honestly, depends on how I’m drinking them. If it’s on an empty stomach, it won’t matter if I ate and drank water shortly after, I’ll be SOL later that night or in the morning if I slammed 3 12oz beers in a short time frame.
Now when we go to the bar to watch a game or a fight (maybe happens once every 3-4 months) and have food coming to the table all night, I can easily down 4-5 32oz mugs of whatever draft they have on tap over a few hour period and not feel any ill effects the next day.
Used to love to drink, do drugs, and party. Now I pick my spots. I hate drinking the most because 1. the buzz is whatever to me and 2. I hate the feeling the next day. My GF still drinks frequently – I usually just have 1-2 beers maybe 2-3x a month.
Happened to me too when I was 37 – I had three drinks one Friday evening, felt hungover next day. I waited until the next Friday to drink again, another 3 beers, but felt sick even before bed. Didn’t drink again until the next Friday, had one beer and felt sick 20 minutes after drinking it. I took it as a sign. That was my last drink – I’ve been sober over 6 years now.
I’m not sure what happened; comedian Ron White jokes about everybody having a limit of how many drinks they can consume in a lifetime and I guess I hit mine.
Thankfully, I can’t relate yet. I didn’t even drink alcohol until my late 20s, but discovered a fair natural tolerance. These days I only have alcohol on weekends, and I stay hydrated. 2-4 imperials and a bottle of wine generally won’t result in any issues next day. If I add liquor or tequila, there might be a headache for 2-3 hours the following day. I’ve never had a day-long hangover.
Welcome to the show 😂
Absolutely. I don’t even enjoy the taste of beer anymore.
I stopped a few months after my daughter was born, just to be more “present” for her. I made a vodka sauce pasta the other night, and I had a little vodka left over so I thought “what the hell, it’s been a long time I’ll have a drink tonight”. I probably had a little more than what would go in a shot glass and I woke up feeling awful the next day. We’ve just lost our tolerance, and I’m not exactly willing to suffer through hangovers to gain it back.
Get yourself some THC drinks. No hangover, fewer calories … win win.
It’s inconsistent for me, and I’m not sure what the pattern is.
Sometimes I can go for a whole session and feel right as rain the next day, sometimes I just have two beers and feel like shit the next day.
When it comes to beer I mostly drink low ABV british/irish ales, german lagers, and Irish dry stouts. Bourbon is my go to liquor but I don’t drink it often. Occasionally I’ll go for a highball like a Jamison Ginger or a Jack and Coke or if I’m feeling fancy a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned or a Suffering Bastard.
I probably consume between 4-12 alcoholic drinks a week, usually not more than 3 or 4 in a day. On any given day, it’s slightly more likely that I don’t drink than that I do drink. Like, I don’t usually drink on Sundays or Mondays or Thursdays. I’ll usually stop at the pub for a drink or two on Tuesday or Wednesday (but usually not both) for their open mics and Irish seisiúns. Often have a beer or two on a Friday night, and a few more on Saturday while watching the footie (or Sunday if the match is on Sunday).
You’re not getting hungover off of three light beers. You have a virus.
Hell yeah I can relate. Last time I drank any amount of significance, was about six drinks, and I felt like I was on death’s doorstep the next day. Now if I drink it will only be one and that’s maybe once or twice a year at most.
This might be weird but if I only have one beer, then I feel like shit after an hour and have a hangover, but if I have at least 2 then it’s way better.
If I were you, I’d experiment with different amounts to find your new tolerance.
Yeah, it was a poor decision. I ended up violently vomiting for 10 min Shortly after my last response. I felt fine until this morning. But that’s how it goes.
I don’t drink much beer these days for this reason. I have found that having a glass of bourbon is much more agreeable to me in the morning.
I drink regularly, but never get drunk. I stop before I get too far. Ive come to realize that it takes me 1 day for every decade I’ve been alive, to recover from getting drunk.
I drank modestly throughout my 20’s and then became a workaholic and pretty much stopped drinking entirely. Then I tried to go back to drinking casually when I was socializing and I regret it every time. I actually wound up vomiting every time I had any alcohol. It was happening with as little as 1.5 drinks. I hated the way it felt so I quit. I still have the urge in a social situation occasionally to have a beer but I just order a Pepsi instead. I haven’t had a drink in about 2.5 years and I’m happy about it.
Yup. You’re over 30. Let him in, boys!
If you drink and have to wake up real early 3 beers might cause hangover but for me it takes like 8 or 9.
Your ability to metabolize alcohol decreases as you age. There’s a big drop in the mid-40s.
But electrolytes and how much you exercise and what you ate also play a factor. Sugar together with alcohol always torpedoes me.
Yes….six beer….
48m … was a regular occasional drinker for most of my adult life. Pretty much stopped drinking altogether about a year ago. I just feel better and i no longer think that the fun buzz is worth the poisoning. I sleep better which makes my mornings better. I never really noticed it in my 20’s , probably due to my metabolism which slows as we age. I also grew up in an environment where thats what all the adults did so when i became an adult thats what i did. It wasn’t excessive but it was a regular occurrence with some heavy party nights. Im a dad now. I have 3 very young kids and one day I was reflecting on how alcohol influenced my environment when i was growing up and i decided that i don’t want my kids to grow up thinking drinking is what adults do and then it becomes a regular habit for them. Im not going to try and hide drinking culture from them i just don’t want them to think regular consistent consumption is ok normal behaviour. Sure they may, if i ever feel like having a drink again, see me have a beverage but i just don’t want them watching me have a drink every day after work or having a few every weekend.
Smoking was the same. My parents smoked , my siblings smoked and eventually i became a smoker. Smoked for over half of my life before i came to my senses and finally quit. Been smoke free for a long long time now. I don’t want to normalize what are poor decisions and bad behaviours and then my kids adopt the addictions.
And i feel healthier.
But don’t just poor your beer down the sink…. Pour them into the water dish in your bbq/smoker or use them for marinades or braising pot roasts or add to chilli.
This happened to me around 26. Now if I drink I’m pretty much useless for the next two days. I’m 35 now so I only drink like once a year if the party is worth it
Not really, moderate drinking light beers doesn’t seem to affect me much the next day. Honestly been disappointed how negligibly better I feel when I take long breaks from alcohol. A couple beers on weekends seems to be best for my mental health while not noticeably impacting me physically. Now some heavy beers, wine, and sugary liquor drinks will give me a hangover even without being drunk.
I think it has to do mostly with being out of “drinking shape”. I too can’t drink like I used to and when I try (once a year maybe) it’s not great. My buddy who is one year older than me is single and still living the college life still drinks like a fish every weekend. Without the negative consequences.
My limit is still around 7-10 before an actual hangover kicks in.
This is not an age issue. It is a tolerance issue. Corona Lite beer is about 4% alcohol content. Corona Extra is 4.5%. If you have not been drinking for awhile your alcohol tolerance is down. Then you drank 3 beers in one sitting- so you got a bit tipsy. Having a hangover the morning after is not unique in this circumstance. The same would have happened to you when you were in your 20s under the same circumstances (ie you haven’t been drinking much for several months/years then decided to binge and drink 3 beers at once). It would be different if you had only had one beer. You had 3.
I used to drink a fifth of whiskey every night for years. Something finally clicked and i stopped drinking. I will still have an occasional drink when offered but i no longer do damage to my liver with excessive drinking.
36m Randomly stopped drinking about a month and half ago and I plan on keeping it up. The anxiety for the next couple days + hangover is absolutely dreadful.
I had two scotches last night, but didn’t eat dinner until afterwards.
I feel like a bag of shit today lol
I was never much of a drinker. Maybe once every 2 months during a sporting event. The resultant hangovers from 2-3 beers were not commensurate with the fun. Haven’t drank in years. I think the only people post 35 whom are drinking regularly could probably qualify for a sponsor.
Buddy I got drunk in three rock shandy’s nothing to be ashamed off.
Yes, it happens. 1 glass of wine practically gives me a hangover.
Have you considered the quality of what you drink?
I’m 42, if I drink shitty beer, or shitty wine, or shitty spirits then I feel like crap.
Good quality craft ales, wine that isn’t full of sulphites and decent spirits and I’m fine the next day.
A couple of weeks ago I had a few beers and quite a few measures of good rum. I was absolutely hammered, first time I’ve been actual drunk in over 5 years.
Next morning, absolutely fine.
as i age, i get worse hangovers…. off less
Lite beer is about the calories, not the alcohol amount 🙂
It do be like that sometimes
Yeah that’s kinda what happens when you get older. I’m 34 and an alcoholic. It gets rough
Corona is 5%.
Thats not lite.
Honestly bro, I hate drinking now…. Gimme a soda and some fries and then I don’t wake up feeling like I got beaten
After 30s hangovers hit different. It made me not want to drink as often. My plans tonight? I’m going to a mocktail bar.
Sometimes I am the same and then sometimes I can put back about 8 and still 8 and still wake up fine. It’s weird.
I cut back to only drinking a few beers over the weekend. I only drink craft beers which usually tend to have more alcohol content, but 3 beers and I’ll have a headache when I wake up. I could put away half a case of coors beer, get a few hours of sleep, and go work a 12 hour shift no problem on my early 20’s.
My grandfather drank a case of beer per day, plus whiskey, well into his 80’s like it was nothing. My dad drank just as heavily until he was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 48. Yet he was still very active when he drank. Some people can handle it and some can’t.
What a coincidence. I’ve been on a 100+ days no alcohol. I would mostly drink at home late at night on Friday and Saturdays. I remember the first week of January this year reading an article about the Surgeon General saying alcohol leads to cancer. I know a lot of things could lead to cancer, but I don’t know why it had an impact on me. Plus, I have 2 girls I want to live long for. I’m almost 37. My youngest is just 1 y/o. I alternate taking care of her with my wife. Friday and Saturday are two of my days, so I didn’t see the point in drinking just to drink even if she was asleep. I may have an occasional drink down the line when I could let my guard down for a change, but I feel perfectly fine not drinking.
