MIL Old Christmas Story

r/

My MIL (50sF) got my husband (28M) a nice knit grey beanie hat from Lululemon for Christmas and I commented saying it was a really nice hat and would look good on him. She then said she was going to get me one but wasnt sure if I would have liked the pink color they had.

She has multiple ways for contacting me or my husband or even my mom but just chose not too which I found odd. Instead she ended up getting me something from Marshalls. Like why mention that you were going to get me one when you didn’t?

It doesn’t sound like a big deal to me, it just sounds like an offhand comment or perhaps she brought it up as an idea for a future gift and wanted your reaction to see if it would be something you would like.

    Did you ask her this?

She never intended to get you one she just said so to make herself look better in the moment.

My MIL always told me about all the things she was going to buy me but for some reason had an excuse each time. It’s a way to pretend to care but really intended to disappoint the recipient.

Mine basically does “well I was going get gifts but I couldn’t go shopping” There’s no reason she can’t shop. She goes to the mall just to walk all the time. This year she gave her other grandkids weird random things like wheat crackers for Christmas and said it was because they don’t go shopping (again, untrue). But: okay, so then buy candy! Or bubble bath! Or other things grocery stores sell that kids might actually want. And the store the bought it from? Has both a toy and kids book section.
