I hope this is the right place to ask this but I work at a café type place and my coworkers and I have had this issue about getting tips.
We have a tip jar and when it starts getting full we go through and count the money before dividing it equally. This is not a problem.
The problem is that after a few weeks of working here someone higher up (I won’t say their exact position at the café as to keep this as anonymous as possible) has began to take all of the tips out once the jar starts getting about halfway full and putting them into the register as a “donation” to the café. But the people who give the tips and put them in the jar clearly think they are going to the workers at the café…
Is this not illegal?
