Many of the comments confuse dopamine hits with genuine fulfillment.
We live in a culture that confuses the hedonic treadmill of consumerism, confort and fleeting pleasures with meaning. Buying things can numb the void, but it won’t fill it. Real happiness is built, not bought, and mistaking pleasure for purpose is how entire societies end up rich, anxious, and empty.
Nothing. The benefit of money is keeping the wolves away from your door and your loved ones. The junk you buy doesn’t buy happiness. But taking your sick dog to the vet and being able to cut a 4 figure check without blinking to get her better does.
Whoever said that money doesn’t buy happiness has no idea where to go shopping. Give me a million bucks and a week split between Vegas, New York and Paris and let’s talk after about how damn happy i am. Also, if i don’t seem as happy we could always try again, but i get to choose different cities.
Money might not buy happiness, but broke is stressful and unhappy.
What money has done is buy me peace-of-mind that we don’t have to worry about things financially. That’s not a stress that we have. We use the money we have to provide the necessities and to do things that are fun and enjoyable. Fun and enjoyable helps with happiness.
“Money can’t buy happiness but neither can poverty”
While money can contribute to happiness, particularly when it alleviates financial stress and provides access to opportunities, research suggests that its impact on overall happiness plateaus at a certain income level. Studies initially indicated a plateau around $75,000, but more recent research suggests it may be higher, possibly around $500,000.
Money CAN cause/buy reduced stress which allow happiness as well as help you live a longer life.
Reduced stress helps elongate your life like quitting smoking can elongate your life, neither accounts for getting hit by a car/bus/piano/anvil or something else.
That expression is a bunch of malarkey. No money no food no home no wife no kids. Starving lonely homeless. They say starvation is one of the worst ways to die
Having enough money to sit and eat with my kids, instead of waiting last to see what is leftover.
Having enough money for safe housing
Having enough money for my electricity to stay on
A really good pastrami sandwich on fresh rye with stone ground mustard. Maybe if you have a little money left over, you get yourself a latke with a little applesauce on the side.
The curve isn’t straight. If you’re poor, money can buy an increase in happiness or at least save you from a lot of unhappiness. But the difference in happiness between being well off and very well off is small, and being extremely rich even less. A degree of redistribution makes society happier.
I once saw a sign at a restaurant: “Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy ice cream, which is sort of the same thing.”
I used to need to be the friend that was treated when going out to eat, or borrowing a dollar here and there to get a value menu item. Now I am in a situation where my friends and I go back and forth treating each other, and the money I makes lets me feel like I’m a true equal to my friends. Even if its just a 20$ meal, it feels so good when I do it, like I finally made it.
Time in nature, time with family/friends (as long as they are people who treat you well), an easily understandable Bible (like NIV or NASB), pets, coffee!
If money could buy all the things that we know it can’t then I would have an answer for you. I would like to buy freedom. I would like to buy love. I would like to buy health and strength.
Money doesn’t buy happiness? Oh please Because clearly, depression feels so much better when you’re broke, hungry and your AC’s broken in the middle of July
A luxury spa day? That’s happiness.
Ordering brunch without checking the price? Pure joy
A plane ticket to escape the people who say “money doesn’t buy happiness”? Absolute bliss.
Whoever came up with that quote probably never felt the serotonin rush of saying keep the change.
Food to host a big party or barbecue. A cleaning service every once in a while. Wash and fold service at the laundromat a couple times a year. Plane tickets to visit loved ones.
I feel like this is something rich people say so that it discourages others to be rich. We live in a capitalist world and I don’t see that changing anytime soon

Time in nature, time with family/friends (as long as they are people who treat you well), an easily understandable Bible (like NIV or NASB), pets, coffee!
Money buys freedom. Gives you choices. Opens up options. some small (have food at home or eat out inexpensively) some large (work or retire early).
Money wont make you happy but it wont make you sad. Your choices will do that.
