Movie makers need to learn how to balance their audio

r/

I don’t do it often, but when I do it’s because I can’t fucking hear anything except when all of a sudden it’s crazy loud. Mumble mumble mumble, then BOOM. Sound mixing is a lost art.

I find this is also due to my sound setting being wrong, where audio would normally come out of a center speaker but I don’t have a center speaker

Agreed. I use subtitles at home to prevent this.

I’m a professional audio engineer, so please allow me to set the record straight: this isn’t an opinion. It’s a fact.

But seriously, between theatrical mixes and streaming mixes and special release blue ray mixes and the 1800 iterations of discrete and simulated surround formats, the actual film re-recording mixers are shooting at a moving target from a merry go round.

More often than not the issue is with the TV audio settings and not the actual film you are watching.

Sometimes it’s as simple as the audio being set to surround sound, when it should be set to stereo (assuming you don’t have a sound system). Other times there’s option in the audio settings of the TV like “night mode” or “dynamic range compression”. Just play around with the the audio settings and you will likely find a fix.

I wish actors enunciated better. In old movies the enunciation is exquisite.

If numerous movies have the same problem, couldn’t it be argued that it’s easier said than done?

In what world did you come to think that this opinion was unpopular? Subtitles are mandatory in all modern content and it’s the most universally help opinion in all of media.

People who don’t use subtitles and think that modern sound mixing is excellent are non-existent and if they did exist, their opinion would qualify as unpopular.

I don’t think I’ve ever watched a movie with worse audio balancing than Tenet. It was unintelligible even with headphones and subtitles. I wonder if I fully understood a single word in that movie without the subtitles literally spelling it out.
