Movies for your country’s independence day?

r/

It’s Peruvian independence day and I’ve been looking for any movies to watch with my partner to celebrate. I’m now wondering more generally, what are some classic independence day movies for your country?

Cannot say for other countries, but Brazil’s Independence Day is…not that hyped up. It’s a national holiday, which is cool, and I have fond memories of going to watch a small parade and to gain a plastic flag on the street, but it’s not like Bastille Day in France, people are just chilling at home and resting. There’s a somewhat cult film made in the 1970s, in the middle of the Military Regime era called “Independência ou Morte”, you can find it in Youtube, but that is the only movie I can remember ever hearing about. Brazil’s Independence has their myths (the “Independence or Death” shout, aka the “Ipiranga Shout” by Pedro I), we have had some battles specially in the Northeast and at sea, but Brazil’s independence has had far less drama and blood than of our hermano brothers in the continent. They have had San Martin, Bolívar, Santander, O’Higgins, war heroes; Pedro I was definitely not one of those.

We don’t watch movies for our “independence day”(I don’t think they exist either), but we listen a LOT of folk music.

I don’t think we watch specific movies in our independence day.

On the other hand, if you want to know good movies about such topic, I can recommend Belgrano (2010), Revolución: el cruce de los Andes (2010) and La revolution es un sueño eterno (2012).

That’s not really a thing here. It’s more of an outdoor holiday, there’s a number of parades and everyone puts on traditional music and goes out to party.

Tenemos una telenovela, aunque ya es bastante vieja y está basada en los libros de la SEP:

Ehh not so much for independance (Peru is not a very patriotic country in general, there is a moderate sense of community but not so much as the big flourishy pride) but Peru does have a couple of iconic movies on the country in general.

En la Boca del Lobo is a must watch and in general an insanely good movie… but a lot of it is lost if you dont know about the terrorism period we had here. Avenida Larco too (albeit it pales in the face of the musical, its still very good), but once again a big chunk of it depends on knowing the history on terrorism
